Join us for nine nights and eight full days as we enjoy Guatemala’s colonial town of Antigua and the beautiful Lake Atitlán region.

Antigua, in the central highlands of Guatemala, was established in 1543. Situated in a valley surrounded by volcanoes, the city was the capital of Guatemala until 1773, when the capital was moved to Guatemala City due to frequent earthquake activity. In 1979 it was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved Spanish Baroque architecture and historical significance. Antigua is renowned for its vibrant atmosphere, cobblestone streets, and colorful colonial buildings. We will appreciate these qualities during our four night stay in Antigua. Daily itineraries include artist studio visits, galleries, museums, and shopportunities.

From Antigua we head to the stunningly beautiful Lake Atitlán, a large natural crater lake in the Guatemalan Highlands, formed by the Los Chocoyos volcanic eruption around 84,000 years ago. The lake is surrounded by three prominent volcanoes: Volcán San Pedro, Volcán Tolimán, and Volcán Atitlán. It is the deepest lake in Central America and has a surface area of approximately 50.2 square miles. The surrounding Mayan villages are rich in unique traditions, offering a glimpse into the vibrant local culture through art, crafts, and traditional practices. From our hotel in Panajachel each day, we will travel by boat to visit many of these villages.

*The Guatemala Tikal tour (27-06-25-GT-TIK) is an extension of the Guatemala Antigua & Atitlán tour, but requires a separate booking and deposit. It can also be booked without the Antigua & Atitlán tour, but for the Tikal trip to make, at least 5 people must register AND the Antigua & Atitlán tour must make with at least 6 people.

While the tour offers many unique scheduled experiences, its casual structure also provides daily opportunities for travelers to adjust the plans to match their interests and desired speed and intensity.

IDENTIFICATION ~ A passport that is valid for 6 months beyond the tour start date and has at least 4 blank pages for entry/exit stamps is required.

ALTITUDE ~ Guatemala City: 4,921 ft  ~  Antigua: 5,069 ft   ~  Lake Atitlán: 5,125 ft 

WEATHER ~ Weather in Antigua and Lake Atitlán is moderate year round. Typical June temperatures range from daily highs around 74°f to 60°f at night.

TRANSPORTATION ~ We use various modes of transportation in Guatemala, including Tuk-Tuk taxis on cobblestone streets, 20-person boats, and vans for longer drives between towns.

PHYSICAL EXERTION ~ Moderate Exertion (3 of 5) – This tour requires physical agility to be able to get in and out of small taxi boats as they bob in the waves, and stamina to walk at a leisurely pace on hilly cobblestone streets for 15–20 minutes at a time. There are opportunities for more strenuous hikes, mountain climbing experiences, and swimming.  

MEDICAL FACILITIES ~ During most of the tour, major medical facilities will be more than two hours away.

Wednesday 6/16 – Travel/Arrival day – we will transport you from the airport in Guatemala City to the hotel in Antigua where we will spend four nights – our welcome dinner is the only official tour event this day

Thursday 6/17 & Friday 6/18 are full days in Antigua visiting artists' studios, museums, markets, and colonial ruins.

Saturday 6/19 – "Choose your own adventure" day in Antigua with three options:

1. Half day Guatemalan cooking class with chef Luis Felipe Prieto

2. Quarter day tour of Cerro de la Cruz (mountaintop lookout over the city)

3. Full day of self-guided adventure in the city

Sunday 6/20 – Travel day from Antigua to Panajachel on Lake Atitlán where we will spend four nights. On the way we will stop in Chichicastenango for their famous Sunday market.

Monday 6/21 – Wednesday 6/23 are full days on Lake Atitlán where we will travel by boat around the lake visiting the many towns including San Juan La Laguna, Santiago Atitlán, and San Pedro la Laguna

Thursday 6/24 – we'll explore Panajachel this morning before taking our van back to Guatemala City and our celebration dinner

Friday 6/25 – Travel/Departure day – there are no official tour events scheduled for this day unless you have purchased the Tikal Extension*
