About this trip

**Scroll down this page to view the complete, day by day, itinerary**

Upon touching down in Guatemala City, your Heart of Travel Tour Leader will be waiting to greet you and accompany you to the colonial town of La Antigua Guatemala. Before you arrive in this picturesque little town, you'll buzz through the busy urban streets of Guatemala City.

Once settled into Antigua you'll be able to enjoy all that the town and surrounding areas have to offer from coffee farms, to artisan chocolate & wine, beautiful historic buildings, cheerful marimba music, delicious food, colorful markets, and quiet mornings, and bustling nightlife. There is no shortage of activities in Antigua, trust us!

The fun doesn't stop there, during our adventure in Guatemala we will also explore the massive Tikal ruins that loom over the jungle canopy, home to many species of birds, monkeys, jaguars, and other critters. After an exciting adventure in the north, we will enjoy a peaceful day floating leisurely down the expansive Río Dulce before arriving on Guatemala's Caribbean coast.

Finally, our trip will conclude with a visit to the famed Lake Atitlán, where we will spend the night with local families and learn more about cultural customs and traditions in the area along with the artful skill of weaving.

Day One
Welcome to Guatemala!

Participants will be flying in from a variety of different places, therefore, travelers are welcome to choose the flight path that best suits their travel preferences and needs. That being said, we encourage participants to book flights that arrive in Guatemala in the morning or early afternoon so that they have time to get settled before the welcome dinner that evening. If you need assistance booking your international airfare please let us know!

Upon arriving at the airport one of our Program Directors will be waiting to escort you to the beautiful colonial town of La Antigua via private shuttle (approx 1 - 1.5 hour drive). Once in La Antigua, you will be checked into your hotel and given a brief orientation of the city. If you need any assistance going to the bank, store, pharmacy, etc. one of the Program Directors will be more than happy to accompany you. In the event, you arrive early in the morning and would like to coordinate any specific activities during the day just let us know so we can accommodate your requests.

Later at night we will enjoy a traditional Guatemalan meal and learn how to make tortillas during an interactive dining experience at our friend Joaquín’s cooking school just outside of La Antigua. Here we will in the rooftop kitchen and dine on the terrace while you will meet the guides and fellow travelers to discuss the upcoming activities for our adventure here in Guatemala.

The Heart of Travel was born out of a deep-rooted love and passion for travel, art, history, food, nature, culture and adventure as well as a call to give back to the communities and people that had already provided us with so much. The travel industry has long been bombarded with double decker tour busses, beach front resorts and cruise ships, often at the expense of the local communities. As a response to this failing system, we began a boutique travel company that allows clients to explore new places in an authentic and non-touristy way, offering travelers a more intimate and unique experience all while removing the stress and hassle of researching, planning, bargain hunting, reserving and more that goes along with planning a trip or vacation.

We had a wonderful trip to Costa Rica. We were with a great group of people and enjoyed comfortable accommodations, good food, and interesting outings. We visited three different geographic areas in Costa Rica and learned a great deal about the plants, animals and people in each. Our guides were informative and fun, and Chelsea handled every situation with ease.

Most amazing trip ever. Wonderfully organized covering many insightful aspects of Ecuadorian culture and its varied people. Great to learn all that is done to preserve Ecuador’s special natural treasures. Our Ecuadorian guide, Gustavo, went over and above to make our visit the best I have ever had when traveling in a foreign country.

Gustavo, our guide, was wonderful! He was attentive to details & helpful & organized. Great meals including choices like fresh fish and the desserts were fabulous. All the animals and great activities were life changing . Our days were packed with adventure. Some of the boat rides & bus rides in the Galapagos were long & uncomfortable. The accommodations were quite good and ranged from excellent (Hotel de la Isla) to comfortable with a view. (Casa de María needs some hooks to hang things in the rooms but the views were magnificent so can’t complain too much. ) All the support staff from guides to drivers, etc. we’re very warm & welcoming.

Absolutely loved the casa gardenia. Such great breakfasts options. Passion fruit is my new favorite... and such GREAT service. They anticipated our every need... even had food to go for our EARLY morning departures. Thank you !
