Gullah History and Heritage

Our day begins as we depart Savannah and travel through the heart of the South Carolina Sea Islands. We’ll visit one of the nation’s first schools for formerly enslaved people, gaining insight into the legacy of education and self-determination within the Gullah community.

We’ll continue on to historic plantation grounds and praise houses—quiet yet powerful places of faith, resistance, and cultural preservation. Along the way, our expert guide will share stories and context that deepen our understanding of the people and places that shaped the Gullah Geechee legacy.

We’ll enjoy an authentic Gullah meal featuring coastal Lowcountry flavors, followed by time for reflection, fellowship, and celebration of all we’ve experienced. We'll return to Savannah, where you can experience the vibrant nightlife of the historic district.

Hear firsthand stories from residents

Founded in the 1890s by formerly enslaved African Americans and their descendants. Explore exhibits and hear personal stories about language, food, faith, and family life.

Afterwards, we'll return to Savannah. Take the opportunity to ride a trolley or stroll along the cobblestone streets of the River Walk, which are lined with restored cotton warehouses, shops, and restaurants. Watch the ships go by, and take time to reflect or write in your journal about the weekend before heading home.
