About this trip

Journey to Caribbean Colombia to Giana Del Mar (Gypsy of the Sea) for a week of yoga, meditation, elemental exploration, nature, adventure and a traditional indigenous fire ceremony for energy cleansing.

Adventure to the magic paradise on the Caribbean Coast of Colombia, South America. Spend 6 days exploring the jungles, rivers, waterfalls and beaches of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta while enjoying daily Yoga, meditation, and workshops  in the gorgeous ocean front Yoga Shala. Immerse yourself in the elements of the natural world with daily elemental themes.  Enjoy the mystical Sierra Nevada Mountains, also known as “The Heart of the World”. A magical place where rivers flow from the snow capped peaks down into the Sea and the indigenous cultures such as the Kogui and Arhuraco still continue to care for and sustainably cultivate the land. Meet some of the local indigenous tribe as they put on a traditional fire ceremony for our group. This trip is the perfect combination of yoga, adventure, culture, nature, free time, community, delicious meals and relaxation.

Gitana del Mar Boutique Beach Resort is located on the shores of the Caribbean Sea in Colombia, South America. The resort lies at the foothills of the impressive and magical Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the world’s highest Coastal Mountain Range. This area is referred to as the Heart of the world, not only because of it’s geographical location, but more importantly because every single ecosystem exists and thrives in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

It is here in the shadow of the Sierra Nevada, nestled under the shade of majestic coconut palms is a place where you can disconnect from the hectic world and appreciate the simpler things in life.  Find harmony with mother earth as she offers up the sun, empty virgin beaches, fresh salt air and unforgettable panoramic seascapes. Gitana del Mar is a relaxing world where time moves slowly and you can reflect and appreciate all that life and nature have to give. Escape for a while to life by the sea. Feel the raw energy of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Discover peace on empty, white sand beaches. Rise with the sun over the Caribbean and fall asleep counting falling stars in the Milky Way.

Indigenous Cultures

The four existing indigenous tribes (Kogi, Wiwa, Arhuaco and Kankuamo people) are ancestors of the pre-Hispanic Civilization, known as the Tayrona. They still practice and follow the Tayrona belief of “Aluna”, which is the belief that all reality is created by thought. Every object or being has both a spiritual aspect and a physical reality, both of which originate in thought. These people have been calling the Sierra Nevada Mountains their home for hundreds of years.

They refer to this area as “The Heart of the World” because they believe that what happens in the Sierra Nevada also happens everywhere in the world.  They are committed to restoring the equilibrium to Earth by daily ritual practices, mental discipline and meditations. All of their efforts are to help protect the Sierra Nevada and the world from destruction. They have plenty to protect, including multiple ecosystems, such as: wetlands, mangroves, tropical rain forests, desert, alpine tundra and finally reaching snow capped mountains at the summit.

Through all these varied ecosystems, thousands of species of plants and animals have been identified, including dozens of which can only be found here. For example, almost 630 different bird species have been identified here, more than the US and Canada combined.  Many rivers also flow from the mountains, including three large ones that empty the some of the freshest water in the world right onto our beaches. These stunning rivers are all within a 15 minute drive from the property and provide fun adventures, calming fresh water and breathtaking vistas.

There are over 180 species of mammals and over 300 species of birds living in the park, some of which can only be found in this area.

The Eco-Chic Bungalows are the ideal place to relax. Each bungalow is designed with a very distinct architectural feature that the indigenous from the area have been utilizing for hundreds of years…. the palm roof.  Not only are these structures made from sustainably and locally harvested palm fronds, the vaulted ceiling design keeps the rooms cooler and more fresh than any other available, man-made material. There are now two African Safari tents available with real beds and shared bathrooms. The safari tents are a little separated from the main structure and surrounded by beautiful palm trees and have their own patio.

Let the soothing sounds of the ocean lull you to sleep after a full day on the beach and exploring the area. The simple, clean and comfortable rooms are equipped with full private bathrooms, outdoor showers*, fans*, down pillows and plush sheets and towels.

*In order to maintain our sustainable and low energy consumption practices, the resort does not have A/C (Air Conditioning) in the rooms, and our showers at Gitana del Mar do not have hot water.

The Gitana kitchen is focused around a fresh, sea to table approach that combines healthy ingredients together in a coastal themed, fusion-style menu with Colombian, Mediterranean and Asian flavors. In addition to local and regional fish and seafood, our rotating menu also features unique vegetarian and vegan offerings. Gitana is passionate about supporting the community and using the most local ingredients available, including fruit, veggies and herbs from our own gardens and fresh-caught fish and seafood from our regional fisherman.

Tropical juices are one of the most spectacular culinary stars of Colombia, which is why we honor and serve them here daily. Our plethora of seasonal fruits includes: Passion Fruit, Star fruit, Guava, Lulo, Mango, Pineapple, etc. Each of our daily meals features a fresh juice or infused water.

This whole retreat had a wonderfully relaxing, fun, community vibe. Anna does a wonderful job planning and executing a well-balanced event with a combination of meditation, asana and restorative work. She provides a good deal of free time and encourages time together, but maintains an accepting attitude toward those who are less inclined to join the group. The overall feeling during this retreat embraced the true spirit of yoga.
I had a great time ! The resort was family style and rather noisy and action packed with nearby activities. if you are looking for restsul quiet place , this is not it . The accommodation were nice , condo style for us with the use of the kitchen living room and deck. The food was good if you like buffet style serving breakfast lunch and dinner .... delicious but repetitive , same food for the whole weekend ! Not much else on site in terms of restaurants . Everything shuts down at 9pm. If you are hungry afterwards you gonna drive outside the resort . Anna was a wonderful attentive host ! Love her to death ! She is amazing yoga Instructor. Her yoga classes were awesome !!
Anna’s retreat in Tahoe was fantastic. She’s an excellent yoga teacher and provided a comfortable and relaxing experience. I had a great time meeting new people and experiencing a rejuvenating weekend.
An incredible phenomenal experience would love to do it again I cannot wait for the opportunity. It was a great bonding experience for my sister and I
