About this trip

On these dates we will be supporting the Amachay Yumi Festival. We are running our amazing 'Heart of the Marañón' Package as normal: same attractions, great service, delicious menu and quality accomodations. The big difference is that you will be travelling with the team running this festival and journalists reporting on it.  You will have the opportunity to participate in fiestas (film screening & party) in three local villages along the way and be a part of this festival which will help to protect Peruvian Rivers.

This trip has it all; the colourful culture of the high Andes, heart warming visits to remote riverside villages, waterfalls in lush the Amazonas jungle and ruined Cities atop mountain peaks in the Kingdom of the Clouds.  9 or 11 day options available.

We begin the adventure by rafting through the 'Heart of the Marañón' on a 7 day whitewater rafting expedition where jaw dropping views can be found around every bend. We camp on remote pristine beaches, untouched and unspoiled and an enjoy impossibly classy menu. Most days offer side hikes into stunning canyons, waterfalls, natural pools and friendly villages. This river journey through the Grand Canyon of South America is unforgettable and for good reason- Rio Marañón as source of the Amazon is one of the most important and endangered rivers on the planet.

After 140km on the river we arrive into the Northern Amazonas and travel into the mountains. We hike into the cloud forest to experience Gocta Waterfall, at 771m it is one of the tallest on the planet. We will also trek around the ancient Citadel of Kuelap; a remnant of the fascinating Chachapoyan Culture with 20m high stone walls and over 420 circular stone buildings. Kuelap is thought to have been an important Chachapoya ceremonial center with some 3,000 inhabitants dedicated to rituals and solar observations.

This is truly one of the most unforgettable multi-sport adventures out there, in a pocket of the world which is still largely untouched and unknown. You will be travelling with Marañón Experience, experts in sustainable eco-tourism in this area; their mission is to ensure the Marañón River, Source of the Amazon is protected in its free flowing state, and everything they do forms a part of this mission- from interactions in local villages, to sharing this wealth of knowledge with guests.

Absolutely incredible experience! I have know Ben for quite a few years, but never gone on a trip with him and Luigi. I knew it would be fun and interesting -- but this really blew all expectations out of the water. The rafting was wildly fun. The food was fantastic. The camaraderie was great and we made lasting friendships. More than anything, Ben and Luigi shared their passion and knowledge of the area with us. It was an amazing experience.

What an amazing experience! This trip was better than I could have hoped for. The scenery, the guides, the food, the fun. It is obvious from the beginning that these guides are passionate about their work and about the river that they are working hard to protect. They are attentive, organized, and just all around excellent people to spend time with. Our 7 day experience combined a perfect mix of adventure, learning, and simply being. I will cherish my memories of the Maranon for a lifetime. Thank you Ben and Luigi!

We floated the Rio Maranon in October 2019 from Chagual to Puerto Malleta (13 days) with Maranon Experience. We found large sandy beaches, exciting rapids, beautiful scenery, good food and educational cultural experiences with local people. It was a row-your-own style trip with a group of our experienced river friends. Our guide Luigi was fantastic - very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, thoughtful, and fit right in with our group. We highly recommend this trip with Maranon Experience!

I absolutely loved my 7-day trip on the Maranon with Ben, Luigi, and company. The river itself was a perfect introduction to whitewater rafting, with the right balance of thrilling class IV rapids but the safety net of very experienced guides. The natural beauty of the canyon was stunning, with breathtaking views of the Andes around every corner. I really enjoyed the day hikes to lookouts and waterfalls. Connecting with local villagers (e.g., taking part in soccer games and fiestas) was also a highlight. And the food was far better than I thought possible for a large group camping trip. The guides themselves were super friendly and easy to get along with, extremely knowledgeable about the river, the local geography, and history of the region. They are clearly passionate about preserving the Maranon, and have done a fantastic job at creating an enivironmentally-friendly, ethical business. It was truly an experience of a lifetime!
