We hiked to the refugio at Cotopaxi and afterwards we rode horses in the valley below for 2 hours...great day! Roberto from Great Horned Owl was awesome. He picked us up on time at 7:00am at the JW Marriott Quito in a nice comfortable van with a driver. His english was excellent. On the drive up to Cotopaxi National Park we briefly stopped at the side of the road so he could pick fresh eucalyptus leaves for us to smell. He said this was our first step in acclimatizing to the high altitude of 14,800' we would be starting at. Next we stopped at a small cafe, he wanted us to drink coca tea & chew the coca leaves as our last steps to acclimatize. This cafe also had wonderful alpaca souvenirs, beanies, ponchos, etc for sale with the women crocheting them right there. I bought 3 beanies $5 each. Finally we started our trek straight up Cotopaxi mountain with wind gusts of 30-40 mph. It was super cold & drizzly but we came prepared with appropriate gear so staying warm or dry was not an issue. Climbing the mountain at this high altitude was challenging (we had taken Diamox the night before), but the harsh winds was the issue. Luckily I brought my hiking poles which helped to secure my footing before the next step. The ground consists of loose dirt so it was best to step into someone elses footprint. Roberto stayed with me the entire time making footprints for me to step in, reminding me to go slow and breathe deep. The trek up is only .6 of a mile but the elevation gain is 1200' ending at 15,900' ! The sun came out and we could see the refugio which gave me motivation to continue up. It was totally worth it, so rewarding to not have given up like others we saw. At the refugio we paid $1 and they stamped our passports claiming "this is the closest point on earth to outer space!" OK pretty cool claim. On the way down the sun came out again for some great pics. Afterwards we rode on beautiful horses at a ranch in the valley at the base of the mountain for 2 hours. The horses were gentle & well trained. We were outfitted with native ponchos & fur chaps (optional), and helmets. The scenery was unbelievably beautiful & serene. What a change from the fierce winds up above. We rode past a herd of wild horses where our horse trainer tried to lasso one, but his attempt was not successful. It was surreal to watch this live in person vs in a movie. We got more amazing pics with Cotopaxi in the background!. We were exhausted & safe after our wonderful day with Roberto and his driver. We were back at the JW Marriott at 4:30pm. Thank you Roberto for a memorable day at Cotopaxi Ecuador and for telling me I was a strong woman!!! Think he said that because I'm 65 lol.

Roberto was so personable and knowledgeable - our group of 7 thoroughly enjoyed our trip with him. He is also incredibly flexible if your group has specific sites they'd like to see, experiences they'd like to have, or if weather is an issue. He truly brough Quito to life for us. Thank you Roberto!
