About this trip

The Everest Base Camp Trek is challenging, but it is achievable for many travellers with the right preparation, a sensible itinerary and enough time to adjust to the altitude.

You do not need to be a professional athlete, experienced mountaineer or technical climber to reach Everest Base Camp. The standard trekking route does not involve technical climbing, ropes or ice climbing. The real challenge comes from walking for several hours on consecutive days while gradually moving into a high-altitude environment.

The trail begins around Lukla at 2,860 metres (9,383 feet) and eventually reaches Everest Base Camp at 5,364 metres (17,598 feet). Many itineraries also include an early-morning climb to Kala Patthar, which rises to more than 5,500 metres and is often one of the most physically demanding parts of the journey. So, how hard is Everest Base Camp Trek?

For most people, it is best described as a moderate to challenging high-altitude trek. It is considerably more demanding than an ordinary hiking holiday, but with proper preparation, gradual acclimatization and a comfortable pace, it is within reach of many reasonably fit travellers.

The important thing is to understand what actually makes the trek difficult before deciding whether it is right for you.

How Difficult Is the Everest Base Camp Trek?

The difficulty of Everest Base Camp comes from a combination of factors rather than one exceptionally difficult section of trail. You will walk through changing terrain, climb and descend repeatedly, spend several days at increasingly high elevations and deal with colder conditions as you move deeper into the Khumbu.

At lower elevations, you may be able to walk comfortably for several hours. Higher on the route, the same amount of physical effort can feel much harder because the air is thinner and your body has less oxygen available. This is why Everest Base Camp should not be judged only by distance.

A day that looks short on a map can still feel demanding at 4,500 or 5,000 metres. Likewise, a longer walking day at a lower elevation may feel comparatively easy.
