ACCLIMATION WALK - VOLCAN IMBABURA
Mountaineering lovers each year find in Ecuador's elevations the perfect place to live high
altitude experiences. Volcanoes like Chimborazo, Cotopaxi, Cayambe or Sangay take center
stage in this extreme adventure and provoke fans to want to conquer their peaks. But before
going through them, it is important to carry out a previous acclimatization, to achieve the
purpose of reaching its summits. The most optimal and recommended is to adapt to the
environment in lower mountains such as the Imbabura volcano; which is located in the
province of the same name, with an approximate height of 4,630 meters. In the north of the
mountain, at a distance of 10 kilometers, is Ibarra, and to the south is Lake San Pablo, near
Otavalo. The ascent to this volcano is recommended as part of the acclimatization and
preparation if you want to ascend other volcanoes or mountains in Ecuador. The flora and
fauna of the forests that surround the Imbabura is quite diverse, allowing you to discover a
little more about the natural diversity of the area.
We begin by heading through the eastern part of the volcano to the indigenous community
of Casha Loma located at 3,500 meters above sea level. reaching the north summit after 5
hours, and the return is approximately 3 1/2 hours by the same route. On clear days you can
have spectacular views such as the Nevado Cayambe and the Antisana, the city of Ibarra and
the Yahuarcocha Lagoon with impressive landscapes and admire the flora over 4000 m.
