About this trip

Discover the Majesty of Irazú Volcano & the Beauty of the Botanical Gardens

Our journey to Irazú Volcano National Park begins with breathtaking panoramic views as we ascend toward Costa Rica’s highest volcano. At an impressive 3,432 meters (11,260 feet) above sea level, this natural wonder offers a surreal landscape of volcanic craters and sweeping vistas. If we’re lucky, we may spot coatis and hummingbirds fluttering among the vibrant flowers that thrive in this unique ecosystem.

From the accessible parking area, a 300-meter (984-foot) paved trail leads us to the main crater viewpoint, where we’ll take time to appreciate the awe-inspiring scenery while learning about the park’s fascinating geology, history, and diverse vegetation.

After soaking in the magic of Irazú, we make a scenic stop along the way to capture stunning photos of the valley below. And, of course, no visit to this region is complete without tasting freshly picked strawberries, a local delight!

We then head to a charming, fully accessible restaurant, where a delicious traditional Costa Rican lunch awaits.

Our afternoon is spent exploring the exquisite Botanical Gardens, a true paradise for nature lovers. Strolling along the completely accessible paths, you'll be surrounded by an explosion of color from thousands of exotic plants and orchids—more than 15,000 species, including nearly 1,000 native to Central America! This lush sanctuary also showcases plants from tropical regions all over the world, making it a mesmerizing experience for any plant enthusiast. The gardens also offer accessible restrooms and a cozy café, where you can enjoy a refreshing snack before we return.

We have a great time, thanks a lot Agostina for taking care of all the details, we did not have to thing on or be worried about accesibility as everything was in place. People was wonderful, always willing to help

We had great support from Agostina at Il Villagio travel. Our son uses a wheelchair and she helped us find accessible accommodations, and also arranged a rental vehicle that could accommodate his wheelchair (though there were no vehicles available to rent that would allow us to tie down his chair directly, so we had to bring a separate car seat for him). We loved Costa Rica and can't wait to go back!

This was easily one of the top travel experiences we’ve had. Il Viaggio Travel/Costa Rica got everything right…hotels, restaurants, itinerary, excursions. But by far the most wonderful thing they did was team us up with our guide, Margerhita Botazzi. Margerhita’s background in biology and ornithology was an inspired selection, as our primary interest this trip was wildlife and birding. She is exceptional at her craft, identifying birds by sight as well as sound, finding elusive creatures like the sloth, monkeys, and agouti, and assisting us in our photography. She was wonderfully flexible, ready to recommend dining alternatives that would give us a more authentic Costa Rican dining experience and getting us into out-of-the-way locales for wildlife spotting. She watched over our physical welfare every step of the way, crucial since I was scheduled for knee surgery three days after our return. Even the time in the car was enjoyable, with her knowledge of the country’s culture, government, history, and politics. Her auto games and Spanish lessons were a tremendous amount of fun. When we return to Costa Rica we will use Il Viaggio again and will recommend them to friends and family.

Amazing trip, itinerary was fantastic and all wheelchair accessible (with no access issues) Only slight issue was picking up and dropping off the rental car, details on the itinerary were not detailed or clear enough. Mostly the itinerary description was great. Occasionally it could have had more details ie the surfing where we didnt know the time or the company. These are only minor points! Overall had an amazing time and we are so appreciative for all the help and organisation. Agostina was available via whatsapp and always responded quickly which was really helpful!

We have just returned back to the UK from a 7 night trip. What an incredible experience. il Viaggio Travel - 100% recommend using this company for your guided tour / driver. They specialise in accessible travel ♿️ Booking with il Viaggio took the stress away and they organised everything. All of our transportation (10 seater minibus), hotels, trips/tours and restaurants were planned for us. From being collected from the airport, to being dropped at our final destination of the holiday, Emmanuel (driver/guide) stayed with us from start to finish. He was friendly, kind and so knowledgeable about his country and wildlife. We wouldn’t have spotted much without him, he is like a walking encyclopedia. We were lucky enough to see 2/3 toe sloths, viper snakes, leaf ants, howler monkeys, dart frogs, toucans, owls, iguanas, Jesus Christ lizards, and lots more. We spent the last 3 days relaxing at margaritaville as that’s what suited us best after 4 jam packed days. The sunsets on playa flamingo beach are stunning! All of the hotel staff were amazing, plenty of sun beds etc and the choice of food and drink was great. Short walk to bars / restaurants and small marina where we saw sting rays. Hotels: Monteverde country lodge Arenal Observatory Lodge & Trails Playa Flamingo Margaritaville Costa Rica Activities: Monteverde Santa Elena cloud forest Treetopia sky tram Paradise hot springs Mistico park handing bridges Sloth trail (near Don Juan) Don Juan chocolate and coffee tour
