About This Trip
Join a small group of open-hearted women for a week in Abruzzo, a beautiful region of Italy that most travelers have never experienced. We’ll make our home in the seaside town of Vasto, where we’ll explore local markets, medieval villages, the Adriatic coastline and experience the traditions that make this part of Italy so special. Make homemade pasta with an Italian “Nonna” in her family kitchen, spend the day with a local farming family making fresh ricotta and traditional bread, and enjoy a seafood lunch right over the Adriatic on a centuries-old trabocco fishing platform.
We’ll harvest grapes at an organic winery followed by a picnic lunch and wine tasting, visit an olive grove that has been in the same family for three generations, explore one of Italy’s most beautiful hilltop towns, and create a one-of-a-kind keepsake with a local artist using flowers gathered right from his hilltop farm. There will also be plenty of time to wander Vasto, grab a cappuccino or gelato, shop, head to the beach or find a little wine bar. This trip is all about experiencing the Italy most tourists never see and getting a real taste of what it’s like to live like a local for a week.
This multi-inclusive trip includes all lodging, transportation within Italy as outlined, cultural experiences, and many meals.

Most women will choose to arrive a day early to explore this iconic Italian city before our trip begins. We will organize a hotel block and a dinner in Rome for those who are interested. Our group will depart together from the hotel for Abruzzo the following morning.

Day 1 - Rome to Vasto via Sulmona
Journey from Rome to Vasto with Sulmona Lunch
Rome to Vasto
After breakfast, we will leave Rome, making our way through the beautiful mountains of Abruzzo to Vasto, our home for the week on the Adriatic Sea.
Lunch
Along the way, we will stop in the medieval town of Sulmona to enjoy a traditional lunch and wander through the historic town before continuing to Vasto.
Accommodations
We’ll stay at a small, family run neighborhood hotel in Vasto in the very neighborhood where our Italian partner was born and raised and where his mother still lives today. It’s a simple, traditional Italian hotel that gives us the chance to experience what it feels like to actually live in Vasto for a week rather than simply visit. Though basic, the hotel sits beside a beautiful panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Adriatic Sea. It’s just a short walk from the historic center.

Explore the town before we gather for a beautiful welcome dinner with our new friends overlooking the sea.

Day 2 - Cooking with Nonna and Vasto Exploration
Hands-On Cooking and Vasto’s Historic Center
Cooking with Nonna
After breakfast, we’ll visit Vasto’s colorful local food market before heading into the countryside for one of the best experiences of the trip: cooking with “Nonna!” We’ll be welcomed into our Italian partner’s family home, where his mom and family will teach us to make homemade pasta and traditional Abruzzo dishes using family recipes. This is about as uber local as it gets—a little like cooking with your own Italian grandmother. Then we’ll gather around the family table to enjoy the lunch we made together.
Explore Vasto’s Historic Center
In the afternoon, we’ll explore Vasto’s historic center, charming streets, piazzas and Adriatic views, meeting local artisans along the way.

Day 3 - Farmhouse Experience and Roccascalegna Village
Farm to Table Lunch and Hilltop Village
Farm to Table Experience with Local Family
Today we are heading into the Abruzzo countryside for a true farm to table experience with a local farming family. We’ll get hands-on learning how to make pizza scima, a traditional bread made without yeast, and fresh ricotta cheese, then gather vegetables straight from the garden. We’ll also taste some of the farm’s homemade cheeses, salami, olive oil and wine. Almost everything we’ll eat today is produced right here on the farm!
Traditional Farmhouse Lunch
After a traditional farmhouse lunch, we’ll head to the charming village of Roccascalegna said to be one of Italy’s most beautiful hilltop towns.

After lunch, we’ll head to the charming village of Roccascalegna, dramatically perched on a rocky cliff high above the countryside.
Free Evening in Vasto
After a big lunch on the farm, we’ll return to Vasto to enjoy a free evening to explore one of the many restaurants or wine bars.

Day 4 - Abruzzo Coastline and Trabocchi Experience
Hiking Punta Aderci and Seafood Lunch on Trabocco
Hike at Punta Aderci Nature Reserve
Today we’ll head to the beautiful Abruzzo coastline for a hike at the Punta Aderci Nature Reserve with gorgeous views over the Adriatic Sea.
Fishing Demonstration on Trabocco
From there, we’ll discover one of the most unique traditions of this region, the trabocchi. These centuries-old wooden fishing platforms stretch out over the Adriatic and are one of the symbols of the Abruzzo coast. We’ll see a traditional fishing demonstration and learn how locals have fished from them for generations.
Seafood Lunch on Trabocco
Enjoy an incredible seafood lunch right over the waves on a traditional trabocco.
Free Afternoon and Dinner in Vasto
We’ll return to Vasto late afternoon. Head to the beach, wander around town, shop or grab an aperitivo at one of the local cafes—It’s up to you! We’ll then gather in the evening at a local restaurant for dinner.

Day 5 - Grape Harvest and Winery Picnic
Grape Harvest, Winery Picnic and Olive Oil Tasting
Grape Harvest at Organic Winery
After a leisurely start, we’ll head to an award-winning organic winery set between the mountains and the sea. We’ll meet local winemakers, hear their story and learn the secrets to Abruzzo’s wines. After visiting the cellars, we’ll head into the vineyards and join in the grape harvest ourselves.
Picnic Lunch in the Vineyards
We’ll then enjoy a picnic lunch right in the vineyards with local cheeses, salami and other regional specialties along with wine pairings.
Olive Grove Visit and Tasting
After lunch, we’ll visit an olive grove that has been farmed by Giovanni’s family for three generations and learn how their olives are turned into what Italians call 'liquid gold.' And, of course, we’ll taste it for ourselves.

Day 6 - Flower Art Experience and Farewell Dinner
Flower Art, Village Visit and Farewell Dinner
Last Day in Vasto
Soak up everything you love about Vasto because it’s our last day here. Wander Vasto, shop, grab a cappuccino.
Flower Art Experience with Local Artist
Around 5:00 p.m., we’ll head to a tiny hilltop village for a really unique final experience. Here we will meet a local artist at his art farm with incredible views of the sea, mountains, hills and surrounding villages. We’ll head into the garden to gather flowers and leaves right from the property and use them to create natural colors to design a beautiful keepsake.
Aperitivo and Sunset Farewell Dinner
After our art experience, we’ll enjoy aperitivo and a sunset farewell dinner, as we celebrate an amazing week in Italy together.

Day 7 - Farewell and Departure from Vasto
Farewell to Vasto and Departure to Rome
Goodbye Italy
We will say goodbye to our beautiful new friends in Vasto before heading to the airport in Rome where we will say goodbye to our Somewhere Sunny friends, as this beautiful week comes to an end.
