Encounter Holy Souls and Miracles on this pilgrimage:
As we stroll over the time-worn cobblestones of the streets of Rome, the many layers of the city’s 2,800-year history will begin to unfold. From the sculpture and architecture of the Ancients to the vestiges left from the early Church, through the Medieval and Renaissance periods with the masterpieces of artists such as Michelangelo, Raphael and Bernini, Rome is truly a treasure trove of culture, history and faith.
This is a unique time in the Vatican, as Pope Francis continues to define his pontificate and Emeritus Pope Benedict continues to reside in Vatican City in a small convent inside the Vatican Gardens, not far from the Domus Santa Marta, the residence of Pope Francis. The Vatican will be quiet in the early fall, and we will have the opportunity to roam the streets in peace.
During this pilgrimage in which we seek the guidance — and prayers — of “Holy Souls,” we will encounter the holy men and women of old who have left something of their spiritual presence in the places we visit. There are living souls filled with God’s grace, too, and we are very blessed to have Fr. Cassian Folsom, the founding abbot of the resurrected Benedictine monastery near Norcia, Italy, as one of the living “holy souls” on our pilgrimage. It is a privileged time to be part of the living Body of Christ, during these days of the “two Popes” — Benedict and Francis – two other “holy souls,” so very different and yet each so filled with the love of Christ and His Church.
We will also have the privilege of witnessing two miracles. One is the Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano, which not only strengthens our faith in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, but also spurs us to greater love and gratitude to the Lord who has given us this gift: “I believe, O Lord; Help Thou my unbelief!”(Mark 9:24)
The other is the Holy Face of Manoppello, the image of Jesus inexplicably appearing on a rare cloth made from the beards of mussels; it is the Face about which St. Therese of Lisieux wrote: “Thy face, in its unearthly grace/ Is like the divinest myrrh to me.”
With almost 30 years of publishing Inside the Vatican magazine, we have colleagues and friends all over the world — and many of them have become part of our Pilgrimage family.
Designing an Inside the Vatican pilgrimage begins with a theme or a particular country; then we weave in encounters with real people who live and work there, as well as those with expert knowledge in its historical and spiritual perspectives. Our itineraries include both world-renowned and little-known places, and every detail has been arranged to create a truly unique experience; we do not have cookie-cutter pilgrimages!
Whether you choose one of our intimate-sized Signature Pilgrimages, or a Classic Pilgrimage with budget-friendly pricing, we work hard to ensure that every pilgrimage is a moving experience, an authentic spiritual journey for each pilgrim.
This pilgrimage is part of our boutique line of Classic Pilgrimages – carefully budgeted for pilgrims so that they can experience the unique qualities of Inside the Vatican Pilgrimages at our most affordable price, without sacrificing Inside the Vatican Pilgrimages integrity and style. This Classic Pilgrimage is limited to 33 pilgrims.
Please note: we have scheduled plenty of free time to allow pilgrims to rest or explore the different cities we visit during this pilgrimage at their leisure. Each day we will have the opportunity to attend Mass. As a note, we prefer to schedule Mass in the morning, but there is a possibility that Mass times can fluctuate due to circumstances and Vatican events. The Mass schedule will be finalized as we approach the departure date.

You arrive at Fiumicino airport, about 10 miles outside of Rome to the west, near the Mediterranean Sea. You may have seen the sea as your plane circled to land. You will be met at the airport immediately as you exit the secured area.
Depending on your arrival time, there may be time for your first café and cornetto. Your group transfer will take you to the majestic Villa Serenella, a stately, typically Roman villa-turned-monastery and our Roman home for the next eight nights.
After we settle into the Villa, there will be time for lunch and rest before we depart for the Vatican and St. Peter’s Square. There, you will be introduced to Dr. Robert Moynihan and Deborah Tomlinson. Dr. Moynihan, one of the world’s leading Vatican analysts and founder and editor of Inside the Vatican magazine, will lead us on a “familiarization” walk to St. Peter’s Square in front of St. Peter’s Basilica.
After our walk, we will stroll only two short blocks to the Basilica of Santo Spirito, the shrine of the Divine Mercy in Rome for our “welcome” Mass and confessions.
In the evening, we will return to the monastery for a Welcome Dinner with Dr. Moynihan. Our first day will end early so we can all be rested for the journey to come.
Overnight in Rome. Lunch and Dinner are included.
Today we will travel to two shrines that house some of the most important miracles in Italy – the Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano and the Shrine of the Holy Face in Manoppello.
We will be up early to travel about 2½ hours across Italy to the Adriatic Sea, to the town of Lanciano in the rugged Abbruzzo region. In Lanciano, we will enter the church that houses the Eucharistic Miracle to behold the wonders of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ made visible.
We will stop at a favorite local trattoria in Lanciano for lunch.
We will then turn back towards Rome, heading to the tiny town of Manoppello, Italy (population 157), still in the Abbruzzo region, about 40 minutes away. There, we will visit the Shrine of the Holy Face, which houses a mysterious cloth bearing the image of a man with wounds on his face — an image some believe is the actual face of Christ formed at the moment of his Resurrection — and attend Mass.
Following our visit, we will return to the monastery for dinner and another night’s rest.
Overnight in Rome. Breakfast and Dinner are included. Lunch is on your own.
After breakfast in the Villa Serenella, we journey along the Appian Way and explore the underground Catacombs of Callixtus and the Basilica of San Sebastian, one of the seven pilgrim churches of Rome. We proceed to St. Paul’s Outside-the-Walls, dedicated to the Apostle to the Gentiles and holding his tomb. Lunch will be at the new café in St. Paul’s Outside-the-Walls.
In the afternoon, we will proceed to the Church of St. Paul at the Three Fountains (Chiesa di San Paolo alle Tre Fontane), one of Rome’s earliest churches and the site of the martyrdom of St. Paul. Inside, you can see a pillar where St. Paul was, it is said, bound before being martyred. If the gatekeeper is available, the gate may be opened so we may enter and venerate the pillar.
Our next encounter will be at the site of the Grotto of Our Lady of Revelations. It was here that Our Lady appeared in 1947 to the bitter anti-Catholic, Bruno Cornacchiola. During the apparition, Our Lady taught Bruno many truths about salvation, recognizing that we all have our moments of doubt and discouragement, and should turn to her for help. Bruno experienced a reversion, returning to his Catholic faith and beginning a life of evangelization.
There have been at least two miracles of the sun (similar to the way the sun “danced” in the sky over Fatima in Portugal in 1917) reported at this site on the 33rd and 35th anniversaries of the Virgin’s visit here. We return to the monastery for dinner in the evening.
Overnight in Rome. Breakfast and Dinner are included. Lunch is on your own.
After breakfast at the monastery, we will travel to the small town of Subiaco, located about 45 miles east of Rome. In 494 A.D., St. Benedict, a young man in his early 20s, retired as a hermit in a cave (the Sacro Speco or Holy Grotto). He lived there for three years, during which time he developed the discipline that eventually became the basis for Western monasticism.
Father Cassian Folsom, an American Benedictine monk who refounded a monastery in Norcia, will be with us to celebrate a private Mass and visit the Sacro Speco with us. Afterward, we will enjoy lunch very near this famous place with Father Cassian and he will deliver a spiritual reflection on early monasticism. Some of the earliest works printed on Johann Gutenberg's press were books for monks, and the first printing press in Italy was established at Subiaco, Saint Benedict's first monastery, in the 1560s.
We return to Rome for dinner at the monastery.
Overnight in Rome. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are included.
We will have breakfast at the Villa Serenella before departing for Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica. After Mass, Dr. Robert Moynihan will point out select items of spiritual interest inside St. Peter’s Basilica. We will then gather in St. Peter’s Square to hear the Angelus message delivered by Pope Francis and pray the Angelus together with pilgrims from around the world. A meeting in the Vatican will follow. This is a special encounter in which we will discuss issues affecting the Church today.
Lunch will be at one of our favorite restaurants near the Vatican. There will be free time to explore and shop for religious articles for the papal blessing on Wednesday before returning to the monastery for dinner.
Overnight in Rome. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are included.
After an early breakfast we will travel to Assisi, the home of St. Francis and St. Clare. Along our way we will stop at an Auto-grill — a real Italian experience — where you can purchase a café or a light meal.
Pre-eminent among our many significant destinations are the Basilicas of St. Francis and St. Clare. Lunch will be in one of our favorite restaurants near the Piazza del Comune, one of the most beautiful piazzas in Italy.
After lunch, we will journey to the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels, in the valley below Assisi, which contains the Portiuncula, the ancient church St. Francis rebuilt after being called by Christ crucified to "rebuild His Church." If the Bishop of Assisi is in residence, we will visit him.
We will attend Mass in the basilica before we return to Rome. We will stop at an Auto-grill for dinner on your own.
Overnight in Rome. Breakfast and Lunch are included. Dinner is on your own.
After breakfast in the monastery, we will taxi to the Trastevere area of Rome, known as the part of Rome where the early Christians lived, to tour the Basilica of Our Lady of Trastevere. The basilica is said to be the first church dedicated to Our Lady and may have been the first church in Rome where a public Mass was held. Undisputedly one of the oldest churches in the city, its basic floor plan and wall structure date back to the mid-fourth century. The church contains many mosaics depicting scenes from the life of Mary, her coronation, the four evangelists and the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah. The gilded wooden ceiling includes the painting, Assumption of the Virgin.
Lunch will be on your own with free time during the afternoon to explore Rome or return to the monastery to relax.
Overnight in Rome. Breakfast and Dinner are included. Lunch is on your own.
We will have breakfast at the Villa Serenella before departing for Vatican City and the Papal Audience. Lunch will be in one of our favorite restaurants near the Vatican.
In the afternoon, we’ll attend the Vatican Forum, a panel discussion among important Vatican staff members, moderated by Dr. Moynihan. Topics for discussion include issues facing the church during the prior year and what may be the pressing issues for the church in the coming twelve months. Questions and participation by the pilgrims are encouraged!
Return to the Villa Serenella for dinner.
Overnight in Rome. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are included.
After breakfast in the monastery and Mass, we will meet Dr. Moynihan for a walking tour of Baroque Rome beginning at the Santa Maria del Popolo to view two famous Caravaggio paintings entitled, Crucifixion of St. Peter and Conversion on the Way to Damascus. Enshrined at the high altar of the Santa Maria del Popolo is the Madonna Del Popolo, the miraculous image of Our Lady believed to have been painted by St. Luke. Then we walk to the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, as Dr. Moynihan peels back the layers of Roman and Church history for us. Along the way we will also stop at the “Little Lourdes,” the Church of Santa Maria in Via, the location of a miracle that occurred in 1256 known as the “Floating Stone Madonna.”
Our walk takes us to San Luigi dei Francesci to view three more Caravaggio paintings depicting moments in the life of St. Matthew, including The Calling of Saint Matthew. We continue on to the Piazza Navona, a public square built on the site where the Stadium of Domitian, founded in 86 A.D., once stood. It could hold 20,000 spectators who came here to see different athletic competitions. The three elaborate fountains designed during the papacy of Gregory XIII lend a graceful beauty to this famous piazza.
We will also visit the Basilica of Sant’Andrea delle Fratte, which has a very special side chapel. In fact, it is so special that many come to Rome just to pray at its altar (like St. Maximillian Kolbe, who offered his first Mass there on April 29, 1918). Our Lady appeared there to Alphonse Ratisbonne, an avowed anti-Catholic Jew, in 1842, manifesting herself exactly as she appears on the Miraculous Medal, effecting his miraculous conversion.
The first Miraculous Medals were struck in 1832 and, while the Miraculous Medal devotion was already circulating throughout France after St. Catherine Labouré’s Marian apparition, this miraculous apparition to Ratisbonne provided the impetus to bring the Miraculous Medal devotion to Italy.
Lunch is on your own. The rest of the day is yours to wander through Rome or relax on the grounds of the monastery.
Overnight in Rome. Breakfast and Dinner are included. Lunch is on your own.
After breakfast at the monastery, we will depart to visit two of the four patriarchal basilicas in Rome: St. Mary Major and St. John Lateran — both glorious monuments to the Faith, containing treasures of art and faith that can take one’s breath away.
In St. Mary Major, for example, there is a painting of Mary called the Salus Populi Romani, believed to have been painted by St. Luke himself. St. John Lateran is the oldest and ranks first among the four Papal basilicas of Rome, since it is the cathedra or “seat” of the Pope.
We will also visit the churches of St. Praxedes (Prassede) and St. Pudentiana. These women saints were the daughters of St. Pudens, a Roman senator converted and baptized by St. Paul. It is said that St. Paul stayed in their home. The Church of St. Pudentiana also served as the first papal residence; St. Peter lived here for seven years. It is also the site of a Eucharistic Miracle.
A few blocks away stands the lofty Victorian-gothic church of San Alfonso. There we will view The Miraculous Icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help displayed above the altar in the sanctuary below a beautiful mosaic of the Holy Family.
We will also visit the Holy Stairs, the steps of Pilate’s Palace that Jesus ascended, and, time permitting, the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, which contains relics of Jesus’ Passion, both located nearby.
Along with these visits, we will take a driving tour to see the wonders of ancient Rome, including the Roman Forum, the Coliseum, Palatine Hill, Circus Maximus and the Arch of Titus. We will stop for lunch along the way (on your own), and perhaps free time to shop and explore.
Farewell Dinner at the monastery.
Overnight in Rome. Breakfast and Dinner are included. Lunch is on your own.
After an early morning Mass, breakfast, and last goodbyes, transfers will be scheduled to the airport for your return home. Farewell to all our fellow pilgrims and friends until we meet again...
Breakfast is included.
