Discover the Rich History of the Ancient Mayan Civilization at Iximche
Step back in time and explore Iximche, an ancient Mayan city once ruled by the Kaqchikel from the 12th to the 15th century. At the time of the Spanish conquest, Iximche stood as the second most important city in the Guatemalan Highlands, following the K'iche' capital at Q'umarkaj.
The site is a fascinating testament to Mayan architecture, with four ceremonial plazas, each surrounded by impressive temples and structures reaching up to 10 meters in height. You’ll also find two ancient ball courts that reveal the Mayans' unique athletic and ritual practices.
A highlight of your visit is the small museum located at the entrance, where you’ll see sculptures, ceramics, and artifacts uncovered during excavations of Iximche, providing deeper insight into the city's vibrant past.
Iximche is also historically significant as the first capital of Guatemala, founded by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Alvarado.
Your tour begins with an introduction to the site, followed by a visit to the museum to set the stage for your journey. From there, your knowledgeable guide will lead you through the plazas, where each area has its own unique story. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of Mayan society, their daily life, and the strategies they used to defend themselves from enemies. As you explore, you’ll be amazed by the complexity of their social structures and the remarkable civilization they built.
