Professional Development: School visit Grades PreK-8. Please note, when we offer school visits, we are not guaranteeing you will be in your exact grade level. Learning about a new culture and making connections with educators provides an authentic learning experience for you to reflect on and bring back to your classroom. You will be given a professional development certificate for 20 hours of professional development.

Day 1 - June 22

Arrival

Welcome to Japan! Our team will assist with airport transfers from Haneda airport.


Arrive in Tokyo and settle into your hotel.


We will have a welcome reception around 3 PM, depending on participant arrival times.

Day 2 - June 23

Tour of Tokyo

The day begins with a guided sightseeing tour of Tokyo, led by our guide, Setsuko.  10:30-12pm- Educators will immerse themselves in the cultural tradition of a Japanese Tea Ceremony. This elegant and serene activity introduces participants to the intricacies of Japanese hospitality and the importance of mindfulness and appreciation in daily life. 

Educator takeaway: Learning about the cultural significance of the tea ceremony can provide insights into Japanese customs and enhance cultural awareness. 


Next, we will visit :

Senso-ji, Tokyo's oldest temple

Meiji Shrine, a peaceful Shinto shrine nestled in a lush forest. 

Educator takeaway: Understanding the historical and spiritual aspects of these landmarks offers a deeper appreciation of Japan's rich cultural heritage.

Day 3 - June 24

Sightseeing in Tokyo

Today we will continue exploring Tokyo.

 The guided sightseeing continues with visits to:  the Imperial Palace and Tokyo Station. 

At the Imperial Palace, the primary residence of the Emperor of Japan, educators will learn about the history of Japan's imperial family and the architectural design of the palace grounds. Tokyo Station, an architectural marvel, showcases the blend of traditional and modern design, and educators will have the opportunity to explore the station's historical significance and its role in Japan's transportation network.

Educator takeaway: Observing the juxtaposition of historical and contemporary architecture highlights Japan's ability to preserve its past while embracing the future. Educators can draw parallels to their own communities and discuss the importance of preserving cultural heritage with their students.

Day 4 - June 25

Travel to Karuizawa & School Visits

As a group, we will head to Karuizawa, a picturesque town known for its natural beauty and serene atmosphere. Here, educators will participate in a group activity visiting local schools. They will have the chance to observe classroom settings, interact with teachers and students, and learn about the Japanese education system, including teaching methods, curriculum, and student engagement.

Educator takeaway: Visiting Japanese schools provides valuable insights into the country's education system and offers opportunities for educators to compare and potentially implement new teaching strategies and practices in their own classrooms.

Day 5 - June 26

More School Visits & Explore Karuizawa

The morning will be dedicated to another school visit, allowing educators to further explore the Japanese education system. In the afternoon, they will have the chance to explore Karuizawa, with its charming streets, local shops, and natural attractions such as Shiraito Falls and Kumoba Pond.


Educator takeaway: The combination of school visits and local exploration deepens educators' understanding of the community's values and way of life. Educators can reflect on the role of community and environment in shaping educational experiences and student well-being.

Morning Travel to Kyoto & Kyoto Tour

The group will travel to Kyoto, the former capital of Japan, renowned for its historical sites and cultural heritage. 

The day's group activity includes a comprehensive tour of Kyoto's landmarks, such as Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion), Fushimi Inari Taisha, and Nijo Castle. Educators will explore the architectural beauty, historical significance, and cultural stories associated with each site.

Educator takeaway: Exploring Kyoto's temples, shrines, and traditional neighborhoods offers a deep dive into Japan's ancient history and cultural traditions. Educators can use these experiences to enhance their history and social studies curriculum, bringing global perspectives into the classroom.

Day 7 - June 28

Educators will have a free day in Kyoto to explore at their own pace. They can choose from various Viator offerings, such as guided tours of traditional tea houses, cultural experiences like kimono-wearing and calligraphy, or culinary adventures exploring Kyoto's renowned cuisine. 

Educator takeaway: Personal exploration allows educators to tailor their experiences to their interests, enriching their overall understanding of Japanese culture. This free time also offers opportunities for self-reflection and professional development.

Day 8 - June 29

Day trip to Hiroshima

The group will embark on a day tour of Hiroshima, including a visit to the Peace Memorial Park and Museum, and a ferry ride to Miyajima Island, known for its iconic floating torii gate at Itsukushima Shrine. 


In the evening, they will return to Tokyo by train. 


Educator takeaway: Learning about Hiroshima's history, the impact of the atomic bomb, and its journey from devastation to peace and prosperity provides a powerful lesson on resilience and the importance of peace education. Educators can incorporate these lessons into their teaching to promote empathy, understanding, and global citizenship.
