      About this trip

Intuitive Acrylic Painting and Collage with Joan Fullerton

Want more expressive art? Want more confidence in yourself and about your art? Want to have a transformative experience with like-minded people?

This class will take you beyond worn-out or predictable painting methods. We will experiment with innovative techniques and a mindset of relaxed awareness, which have been designed to cultivate curiosity and self-confidence.

Inspiring demos, lots of time to paint, and group critiques will reinforce design and mindset objectives. Critiques will model how to discuss paintings with non-judgmental language that educates you to “see” more and to appreciate whatever might show up so that you and your art will flourish.

“Draw, scrape, roll, drag, spray, stamp, lift, write, drip, your way to fascinating non-objective or abstracted representational subjects. Within the random marks and shapes, there is a story unfolding.”

Discussions will address confidence, procrastination, vulnerability, curiosity, courage, inspiration, intuition, metaphor, symbolic elements, competition, belief systems, and more! I’ll help you dismiss that “mean inner critic” for greater productivity and authenticity.

People being more open and creative when they “play” requires us to indulge in the ridiculous and outrageous, so plan on some goofy behavior and much laughter.

All levels of experience are encouraged to attend.

      About Joan Fullerton

Joan Fullerton grew up on the vast, slow-paced plains of Eastern Wyoming. While raising children, she studied watercolor with Edgar Whitney, Frank Webb, Charles Reid, and many nationally known watercolorists. In 1985, she returned to college and earned BFA and MFA painting degrees from the University of Wyoming. She was a college art instructor at Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyoming from 1990 to 2003. In 2003, she made the leap of faith to relocate and paint full-time in Taos, NM. During her eight years in Taos, Fullerton made her mark and established her reputation as a well-known and respected artist and teacher. In 2010, she moved to Denver, CO, where she now alternates painting in her studio with traveling to teach across the country and abroad.

My painting process is one of experimentation and discovery. While I do not work with a predetermined subject in mind, I often end up with paintings symbolic of man’s connection to the Earth.

With life and art, I intend to discover and maintain a bridge between form and the formless. I make contemplative art, art originating from “deep awareness”, and alive with the mystery of being. It would please me if viewers found my work intriguing and uplifting.

Joan Fullerton is an acclaimed international Artist Educator devoted to uplifting others with Art. She is an expert creativity coach who inspires uninhibited humor, the ability to trust your impulses and to play like a child. A non-judgmental approach to artmaking expands students' confidence, enabling genuine, expressive paintings. Her fine-art career of 50+ years has produced hundreds of poetic images hanging in museums and private collections worldwide.

Fullerton used her MFA painting degree to become an award-winning college art instructor. After 13 years of gaining valuable teaching experience in the classroom, she lived, painted, and exhibited full-time in Taos, NM. When divorce created a need for more income, Fullerton evolved her unique teaching methods to a workshop format and moved to the Denver area. As her reputation grew, she widened her reach well beyond the studio. Now, Fullerton inspires audiences internationally.

Featured in several television interviews, painting blogs, magazine articles, and books, including the #1 bestseller Radical Self Love, Joan Fullerton is most proud of her online art experience, "Paint Yourself Free."

I can’t say enough good things about the experience I had at the David R. Daniels retreat through Artist Rising. The grounds and studio were beautiful, a real inspiration for creativity. Our hosts did everything to make us comfortable from delicious food to enjoyable conversation. Every detail was thoughtfully considered. Thank you so much for a wonderful week!

The artist retreat at Connecticut River Valley Inn was fabulous from beginning to end! It was in a beautiful setting filled with gorgeous landscaping everywhere you looked. The owner, Pat Brubaker, is an artist and that was evident from her attention to detail from the accommodations, table settings, fresh homemade meals, and the actual art studio. All of this was beyond my expectations, even though the website is very accurate! Our instructor, David Daniels, is a master teacher and extraordinary artist with decades of experience painting and teaching. I highly recommend taking a class with him. His style is casual, hands-on, and filled with ideas that you can put to use regardless of your level of experience. This artist retreat had a very positive impact on me personally and as an artist, so I'm very grateful for this wonderful experience!

I enjoyed my watercolor workshop week with David R Daniels. It was a really nice group of people to paint with and discuss ideas with. David's classes are relaxing and informative. The accommodation was cozy! Everyday we had three delicious meals and wine and dessert. The hosts Pat and Terry and Wayne were friendly and accommodating. I am planning another painting workshop for 2025 here.

I have attended several of David Daniels workshops but this was my 1st time at Artists Rising Retreats in Glastonbury CT. Although I didn't have the experience of staying in one of the Inn's beautiful guest rooms I was treated like family during the entire week I was attending a workshop on premise. Each day began with the delightful experience of enjoying breakfast outside on the covered patio surrounded by blooming flowers. This is also where lunch & dinner was served, unless the weather forced us to dine in the lovely dinning room inside. Every meals was delicious, prepared by the host who carefully acknowledged each guest dietary needs. Throughout the day we were welcome to grab a drink or snack if needed. The pathway to the studio was overflowing with gardens and private nooks for us to sit and sketch, read, sip our coffee or just relax in either the shade or the sun. The studio was a terrific space to paint in! The 3 walls of sliding glass doors filled the room with natural light and warmth. We were given access to the studio both day and night. David Daniels guided us through his process of painting from conception to completion in his friendly & knowledgeable style. He is a true master of painting with watercolor and he shares every bit of his many years of experience with his students. My painting skills have grown and improved because of his guidance. I look forward to attending another workshop at this outstanding artist retreat and inn. Many thanks to Pat, Wayne & Terri for making me feel more like family and less like a stranger during my stay. See you again soon!
