About this trip

Mount Mulanje Hiking Adventure – 5 Days / 4 Nights

Costed per person for 2 people

Experience the spectacular landscapes of Mount Mulanje on this challenging and rewarding 5-day guided hiking adventure, designed for two people.

The journey begins with a night at Likuhubula Hikers Nest, where you will stay on an accommodation-only basis before meeting your hiking team and beginning your ascent of the mountain.

Over the following four days, you will hike through Mulanje's dramatic mountain landscapes, spending nights in some of the mountain's historic and scenic huts. The route includes Chisepo Hut, Sapitwa Peak (3,002 m), Thuchila Hut and Lichenya Hut, before descending back to Likuhubula Hikers Nest on your final day.

The hike is fully supported by a local mountain guide, chef and two porters, who will accompany you throughout the expedition and carry the food, cooking equipment and overnight supplies.

This is an active mountain adventure rather than a conventional trek, with several long and demanding hiking days. The itinerary allows for a steady pace, regular rest stops and flexibility depending on weather, trail conditions and how you are feeling on the mountain.

The highlight for many hikers is the opportunity to attempt Sapitwa Peak, the highest point on Mount Mulanje at 3,002 meters. The summit is optional, and your guide will support you in making the decision based on your fitness, the weather and how you are feeling on the day.

From the forests and waterfalls to the high mountain ridges, historic huts and spectacular views, this adventure offers an opportunity to experience Mount Mulanje on foot, with the support of a dedicated local hiking team.

Please note: The mountain huts are basic facilities. Guests should be prepared for simple accommodation, long-drop toilets and basic washing facilities. The hiking team provides the expedition cooking equipment and food, but guests are responsible for bringing their own personal hiking gear and clothing.

The guide reserves the right to change the route or to cancel the peak hike should there be rain of bad weather

Arrival at Likuhubula Hikers Nest

Day 1 – Arrival at Likuhubula Hikers Nest & Hiking Briefing

Today you will make your own way to Likuhubula Hikers Nest, where you are booked into a simple, clean and comfortable room for the night. The accommodation is ideally located at the foot of Mount Mulanje, making it the perfect starting point for your hike tomorrow.

Once you have settled in, take some time to prepare for the adventure ahead.

At approximately 4:30 pm, your on-the-ground handler, Lewis, will meet you at Likuhubula Hikers Nest. He will go through the hiking plan with you, answer any questions and make sure everything is organized for your departure the following morning.

Preparing for Your Hike

We recommend starting your hike early, at approximately 6:30 am, to make the most of the cooler morning conditions.

Please speak with Ruth at Likuhubula Hikers Nest and arrange for breakfast to be served at around 6:00 am, allowing you enough time to eat and be ready to depart at 6:30 am.

It is also advisable to order your dinner when you arrive and request a specific serving time, as food can sometimes take a while to prepare.

If you are arriving with your own vehicle, please ask Ruth whether you can leave your car parked at Likuhubula Hikers Nest while you are hiking. This is usually possible, although a small fee or tip may be requested.

Your Hiking Team

Your hiking team will consist of:

  • 1 local mountain guide

  • 1 chef

  • 2 porters

You will need to bring two large backpacks for the hike:

  • Backpack 1: Your personal belongings, together with the two hired sleeping bags

  • Backpack 2: Your hiking team will pack your food and provisions for the expedition

Each backpack can weigh up to 15 kg. Please keep this in mind when packing and try to bring only what you will genuinely need for the mountain.

After your briefing with Lewis, enjoy dinner and have an early night, as you will have an early start tomorrow for your Mount Mulanje hiking adventure.

Day 2

Likhubula to Chisepo Hut (2,219m) via Skyline Route

Day 2 – Hiking Mount Mulanje via Skyline to Chisepo Hut

Your adventure begins early this morning with breakfast at 6:00 am, which you will have arranged with Likuhubula Hikers Nest the previous day.

At approximately 6:30 am, you will meet your hiking team and begin your ascent of Mount Mulanje, following the Skyline Route towards Chisepo Hut.

Today’s hike is approximately 6 hours, depending on your pace, weather conditions and time spent along the route. If you depart at 6:30 am, you can expect to arrive at Chisepo Hut around midday to early afternoon.

Your hiking team will consist of:

  • 1 local mountain guide

  • 1 chef

  • 2 porters

Your local guide will lead the way, while your chef and porters will carry the supplies needed for your overnight stay.

Your destination for today is Chisepo Hut, at an altitude of approximately 2,219 meters. Chisepo Hut is the newest hut on Mount Mulanje and is beautifully situated for those continuing onwards to Sapitwa, Mulanje’s highest peak at 3,002 meters.

Your Overnight Bags

You will be bringing your own two large backpacks for the expedition.

  • Backpack 1: Pack your overnight personal belongings into this backpack. The two hired sleeping bags will also be added to this bag before the porters set off.

  • Backpack 2: Please give your second large backpack to Lewis empty. The porters will use this backpack to carry the food, cooking equipment, plates, cups, crockery and other supplies required for the expedition.

Lewis will organize both backpacks with the porters before you depart. The porters will set off ahead of you and will be waiting at Chisepo Hut for your arrival.

Please make sure you keep everything you need for the day's hike in your small day pack. You will only have access to your overnight backpacks once you reach Chisepo Hut, so make sure anything you may need during the hike is kept with you.

Each of your large backpacks can weigh up to 15 kg, so please pack carefully and keep unnecessary items to a minimum.

Your Day Pack

Keep your day pack as light as possible and carry only what you need for the day's hike.

We recommend bringing:

  • 1-litre drinking water bottle

  • Drinking water for the day

  • Sunscreen

  • Sunglasses

  • Hat

  • Camera/phone

  • Hiking snacks

  • Small personal first-aid kit

  • Raincoat or lightweight waterproof jacket in case the weather changes

  • Any personal medication you may need during the day

Your guide will show you where it is safe to top up your water along the route. The natural mountain water is generally safe to drink, but if you prefer not to drink untreated water, please bring water purification tablets or a suitable filter water bottle.

Hiking Snacks

You will be hiking for several hours, so it is useful to have easily accessible, energy-rich snacks with you.

We suggest:

  • Granola bars or hiking energy bars

  • Nuts and seeds

  • A few sweets or pieces of candy for a quick energy boost when you need it

  • Rehydration sachets/packs

  • Anything else you particularly enjoy snacking on

Keep your snacks somewhere easily accessible in your day pack so you don't have to stop and unpack everything to reach them.

What to Pack in Your Overnight Bag

Your overnight bag should contain the clothing and personal items you will need at the mountain hut:

  • Nightwear

  • Warm tops

  • Fleece or warm jacket

  • Spare long trousers

  • Shorts

  • Swimwear

  • Hiking shoes

  • Flip-flops

  • After-sun lotion

  • Insect repellent

  • Waterproof lining or dry bags for the contents of your backpack

  • Toilet paper

  • Wet wipes

  • Candles

  • Head torch

  • Towel

Remember that each large backpack can weigh up to 15 kg, so pack carefully and keep unnecessary items to a minimum.

Arriving at Chisepo Hut

After approximately six hours of hiking, you should arrive at Chisepo Hut around midday to early afternoon.

Chisepo is a basic but clean mountain hut, and it is important to arrive knowing that facilities on the mountain are simple. The hut has long-drop toilets and basic washing facilities.

Once you arrive, take some time to settle in and enjoy the mountain surroundings. You can have a shower and freshen up after the hike. There is a hut attendant who can prepare hot water for you to have a traditional bucket shower. If you don't mind a cold shower, simply ask him to put cold water in the shower room for you.

The hut attendant is responsible for looking after the hut and keeping it clean. He also brings in drinking water, collects wood for the fire and takes care of the general upkeep of the hut.

It is customary to give the hut attendant a small tip when you leave as a thank you for looking after the hut and helping to make your stay comfortable.

Once you have cleaned up and refreshed, your lunch should be ready, giving you the chance to enjoy a well-earned meal after the morning's hike.

The remainder of the afternoon is yours to relax and enjoy the hut at your own pace.

If you still have some energy and the weather allows, you can ask your guide to take you down to the nearby natural swimming pool, which is not far from the hut, for a refreshing swim.

Alternatively, take out a book, sit back and enjoy simply being on the mountain.

In the evening, your chef will prepare dinner for you at the hut. Enjoy a good meal, take in the mountain atmosphere and then settle in for an early night. Tomorrow will be another early start and a long day on Mount Mulanje, so getting a good night's rest is important.

Day 3

Day 3 image

Chisepo Hut to Sapitwa Peak (3002m) back to Chisepo Hut & Thuchila Hut

Day 3 – Sapitwa Peak & Thuchila Hut

Today is another early start and a full, demanding day of hiking on Mount Mulanje. You will begin your day at 5:30 am from Chisepo Hut and aim to complete the ascent of Sapitwa Peak, before returning to Chisepo and then continuing onwards to Thuchila Hut.

Sapitwa Peak – 3,002 meters

Before setting off, make sure you have plenty of water and hiking snacks in your day pack. It can be cold and very windy at the summit, so carry a warm fleece or jacket to put on when you reach the top, along with your waterproof layer in case the weather changes.

5:30 am – Depart Chisepo Hut

You will set off with your guide at approximately 5:30 am for the ascent towards Sapitwa. This is a tough and physically demanding hike, with steep and rocky sections.

Take your time and maintain a steady, comfortable pace. There is no need to rush, and your guide will help you manage the route and pace throughout the morning.

Reaching Sapitwa is an achievement, but the summit is optional. If at any point you feel that you do not want to continue to the peak, simply let your guide know. You can turn back and continue with the rest of the day's plan.

Morning – Sapitwa Peak

Continue upwards towards the summit, taking breaks as needed. Once you reach Sapitwa at 3,002 meters, take some time to enjoy the incredible mountain views and, weather permitting, celebrate reaching the highest point on Mount Mulanje.

After spending some time at the summit, you will begin your descent back towards Chisepo Hut.

Around Midday / Early Afternoon – Return to Chisepo

On returning to Chisepo, your chef will have food prepared for you so that you can eat, rest briefly and replenish your energy.

You will then collect and pack up your belongings and prepare for the next section of the day's hike.

At this point, you have a choice.

If you feel that the Sapitwa hike has been enough for one day and you would prefer to rest, you can stay a second night at Chisepo Hut.

If you are feeling strong and are happy to continue, you will set off with your guide and hiking team towards Thuchila Hut.

Afternoon – Hike to Thuchila Hut

Thuchila Hut – 2,303 meters

The route onwards to Thuchila forms the second major section of an already long hiking day. Take your time, maintain a steady pace and allow yourself regular breaks when needed.

Thuchila Hut was originally built in 1901 and is the oldest of all the shelters on Mount Mulanje. It is beautifully situated, with views looking north-east towards Elephant's Head.

Depending on your pace, the time spent at Sapitwa and the conditions on the mountain, you will arrive at Thuchila Hut later in the afternoon or early evening.

Evening – Thuchila Hut

Once you arrive, settle into the hut and take some time to clean up and refresh after what will have been a very long day on the mountain.

Your chef will prepare dinner, after which you can relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the hut.

After such a demanding day, an early night is recommended. You will need to rest and recover for the next stage of your Mount Mulanje adventure.

Overall timeline:
5:30 am – Depart Chisepo → Morning – Ascend Sapitwa (3,002 m) → Midday/early afternoon – Return to Chisepo, eat and pack → Afternoon – Continue towards Thuchila → Late afternoon/early evening – Arrive at Thuchila Hut (2,303 m) → Evening – Dinner, relax and early night.

Please note that timings are approximate and will depend on your pace, weather, trail conditions, rest stops and how long you spend at Sapitwa.

Day 4

Day 4 image

Thuchila Hut to Lichenya Hut 1840m

Day 4 – Thuchila Hut to Lichenya Hut

Today begins with a slightly later start after the previous day's demanding hike. Aim to be up and ready by approximately 7:00 am.

After a good breakfast prepared by your chef, pack up your belongings and prepare for another full day of hiking across Mount Mulanje.

Your destination today is Lichenya Hut, at an altitude of approximately 1,840 meters.

A Long Day on the Mountain

Today's hike will take approximately 7 hours, depending on your pace, rest stops and weather conditions. It is another substantial day on the mountain, so take your time, maintain a steady pace and enjoy the changing landscapes as you make your way towards Lichenya.

Make sure you have your day pack with plenty of drinking water and hiking snacks. Granola or energy bars, nuts and seeds, sweets, and rehydration sachets are all useful to have readily available during the day.

Your porters will travel ahead with the larger packs and supplies, so you only need to carry what you require for the day's hike.

Arriving at Lichenya Hut

After approximately seven hours on the trail, you will arrive at Lichenya Hut at 1,840 meters.

Lichenya is the largest hut on Mount Mulanje, providing a welcome place to rest after the day's long hike.

On arrival, your chef will have lunch prepared for you, giving you the opportunity to eat, replenish your energy and settle into the hut.

The remainder of the afternoon is yours to relax and enjoy the mountain surroundings.

Take some time to clean up, read, rest or simply sit back and appreciate the beautiful setting.

Later, your chef will prepare dinner, followed by another peaceful evening on the mountain.

After several demanding days of hiking, enjoy a well-earned early night and allow yourself plenty of time to rest and recover before the next stage of your journey.

Day 5

Day 5 image

Lichenya Hut to Likuhubula Hikers Nest

Day 5 – Lichenya Hut to Likuhubula Hikers Nest

Today marks the final day of your Mount Mulanje hiking adventure.

After a good breakfast, you will pack up and prepare to leave Lichenya Hut at approximately 7:00 am. From here, you will begin your descent towards Likhubula and Likuhubula Hikers Nest, where your Mulanje adventure began.

Descending Mount Mulanje

The descent will take approximately 4½–5 hours, depending on your pace, rest stops and trail conditions.

Although you are heading downhill, this is still a substantial hike, so take your time and enjoy the final opportunity to experience the forests, landscapes and scenery of Mount Mulanje.

You can stop along the way to enjoy a packed lunch, which your chef will have prepared for you.

Arriving at Likuhubula Hikers Nest

You should arrive back at Likuhubula Hikers Nest in the early afternoon.

Once you arrive, you can take some time to freshen up, collect your belongings and pack up your vehicle. From here, you are free to continue with your onward journey to your next destination.

Before saying goodbye to your hiking team, it is good etiquette to give your guide and porters a small tip as a gesture of thanks for their hard work, assistance and company throughout your Mount Mulanje adventure.

We hope you have enjoyed your time on Mount Mulanje and leave with some wonderful memories of hiking through one of Malawi's most spectacular mountain landscapes.
