About this trip

Spend nine days among the snow-capped Tien Shan mountains, alpine valleys and the shores of Issyk-Kul Lake, with Kyrgyz nomadic culture woven through every day. Autumn is a beautiful time to visit, when the valleys turn gold and the mountain air is crisp and clear.

Begin in Bishkek, the capital, then walk the forests and riverside trails of Ala-Archa National Park. Follow the old Silk Road to the 11th-century Burana Tower, and ride horses with local handlers through the green Chon-Kemin Valley. Along Issyk-Kul, one of the largest alpine lakes in the world, you'll find ancient petroglyphs, red sandstone gorges and the colorful formations of Fairy Tale Canyon.

Three nights are spent in yurt glamping camps with private bathrooms, so you can experience nomadic life in comfort. You'll meet a berkutchi for a golden eagle hunting demonstration, explore the pagoda-style mosque and wooden houses of Karakol, and visit the artisans who make felt carpets and yurt frames by hand. The pace is relaxed, with easy walks, scenic drives and plenty of time to slow down and take it all in.

Arrive in Bishkek

Welcome to Kyrgyzstan! Your local guide meets you at Manas International Airport, with an early hotel check-in so you can rest after your flight. In the afternoon, get to know the capital, starting at Ala-Too Square and the monument to Manas, the legendary hero of the Kyrgyz people. Continue past the Parliament House and Lenin Monument in the Soviet-era Old Square, then stroll through Oak Park, one of the city's oldest green spaces, and Victory Square.

Overnight: Bishkek

Ala-Archa National Park

Just 45 km south of Bishkek, Ala-Archa is one of the country's most loved natural areas, known for alpine forests, rushing rivers and snow-covered peaks. Your guide leads a walk up the valley, and you choose your pace: a gentle riverside path with great photo stops, or a longer mountain trail for those wanting more. Return to Bishkek in the afternoon for a free evening to explore the city on your own.

Overnight: Bishkek

Day 3 image

Burana Tower & Chon-Kemin Valley

Step back into Silk Road history at Burana Tower, an 11th-century minaret surrounded by an archaeological site and a field of ancient Turkic stone statues called balbals. Continue into Chon-Kemin Valley, a picturesque region of mountains, forests and traditional villages, and settle into a local guesthouse. In the afternoon, saddle up for a 1–1.5 hour guided horseback ride on gentle valley trails, a beginner-friendly way to experience the central role horses play in nomadic life.

Issyk-Kul Lake & Karkyra Valley

Wind through the dramatic Boom Gorge to the shores of Issyk-Kul, framed by the peaks of the Tien Shan. In Cholpon-Ata, wander an open-air field of ancient petroglyphs carved with animals, hunting scenes and daily life from the region's earliest cultures. Follow the northern shore through small villages to Karkyra Valley near the Kazakhstan border, where your yurt camp awaits with private bathrooms, showers and electricity.

A Slow Day in Karkyra Valley

This is a day to breathe deeply and enjoy where you are, with nowhere to rush off to. Take an easy walk along the river or through alpine meadows, photograph the mountain views, and watch traditional rural life unfold around you. Spend the afternoon relaxing at camp, or arrange an optional horseback ride locally (this option is definitely going to happen).

Karakol

Travel through mountain scenery and villages of eastern Issyk-Kul, stopping at the memorial to explorer Nikolay Przhevalsky. Arrive in Karakol, a charming town where Kyrgyz, Russian and Dungan cultures meet. Red Rocks, Fairy Tale Canyon & Golden Eagles

Start at Jety-Oguz Gorge, famous for its red sandstone cliffs known as the Seven Bulls and the Broken Heart. Continue along the southern shore to Skazka Canyon, where an easy walk reveals red, yellow and orange rock sculptures shaped over thousands of years. The day's highlight is meeting a berkutchi, a traditional eagle hunter, who shares how golden eagles are trained and the bond between hunter and bird, before you settle into a lakeside yurt camp.
