The Matukituki Valley Trek is a great overnight adventure in Mount Aspiring National Park for all ages and abilities. This trek is run exclusively for small private groups, so trips can be individually tailored to conditions, fitness, and personal ambition. We drive an hour west from Wanaka to the Mount Aspiring National Park and walk 2-3 hours to the public Department of Conservation Aspiring Hut. This is a large, basic communal facility with mattresses and cooking benches.
Day 1
Meet your guide and travel from Wanaka to the end of the Mount Aspiring Road and entrance to the Aspiring National Park. From here we walk along and easy track to Aspiring Hut (9km, 2-4 hours). If after a bit more distance, we can leave our overnight bags and do the side trip up the Royb Roy Glacier Track to viewpoints of the waterfalls and glacier.
Day 2
On the second day you can explore up the valley towards Shovel Flat for views of French Ridge and Tititea / Mount Aspiring before heading back down the valley.
Extras
For longer trips, there are a number of day trips available from the hut, including the Upper Matukitukit Valley, Cascade Saddle, Liverpool Hut and French Ridge Hut.
