About this trip

Bitterroot Backpacking is hosting a free guided hike to Canyon Lake in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness. This 9.7 mi hike with 2660 ft of elevation lake is scheduled for August 16th at 9:30 am! We will meet at the Canyon Creek Trailhead sign at that time! The entire trip will take about 6 - 8 hrs.

This hike is meant to both raise awareness for Men's mental health, but also is meant to be a therapeutic hike for local men who want to get out into nature for a few hours and meet other like-minded dudes. With that said, this hike is open to anyone! Anyone is welcomed to sign up!

This hike is rated "Hard" on AllTrails! It is indeed a hard hike, but most people in normal physical condition can complete it! If you are unsure of your ability, feel free to reach out email us at BitterrootBackpacking@gmail.com!

The planned group size is 5 - 10 people. If the group is large enough, we will likely have two groups; a fast group, and a paced group. In that case, we will provide radios to keep the two groups connected while hiking.

Once we reach Canyon Lake, we'll relax and eat lunch (BYO), go fishing (BYO), go swimming, etc., and explore the lake surroundings for about an hour total.

We will then turn around and head back down the same way we hiked up. The way down will be much quicker than the way up and hiking poles are advised for the steep downhill sections.

This trail currently has quite a few downed trees to hike around and climb over, so please be aware of that hazard and be prepared to overcome some real obstacles!

It is recommended that you wear comfortable, layered hiking clothing appropriate for the temperature that day. It is expected to be chilly in the morning and hot in the afternoon. It's ALWAYS a good idea to bring a raincoat on any day hike in Montana mountains! Hiking shoes or boots are highly recommended for this trail!

Please plan to carry your own equipment, water, and snacks. There are a few places to filter water along the trail, and the water at the lake is filterable too of course.

This hike is subject to cancellation due to thunderstorms for more than 3 hrs, high winds, wildfire, wildfire smoke, and/or if there are less than 2 participants.

There is a pit toilet at the trailhead, but none along the trail.

Dogs are welcome!

Look for the group standing around the Canyon Creek Trailhead sign at 9:30 am sharp!

***Disclaimer: By RSVP'ing to this event you are acknowledging that you are attending at your own risk.
