Mexico City is the capital of Mexico and the most populous city in North America. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the Western Hemisphere, with a rich and complex history that spans more than seven centuries. It has served as the political, cultural, and economic center of the region since its founding as Tenochtitlan by the Aztecs in 1325.

According to legend, the city was established on an island in Lake Texcoco after the Aztecs saw an eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in its mouth, fulfilling a prophecy. Tenochtitlan was a marvel of architecture and engineering, with massive temples, palaces, and marketplaces built on a series of small man-made islands connected by a sophisticated system of canals. It became the capital of the Aztec Empire and the political and economic hub of Mesoamerica. After the Spanish conquest in 1521, it was rebuilt as Mexico City, becoming the capital of New Spain. Over time, the city was transformed into a Spanish Colonial metropolis, with European-style architecture, churches, and plazas. In 1821, Mexico City became the capital of independent Mexico.

Our tour of Mexico City reveals these layers of history—indigenous heritage, transformation under Spanish Colonization, and the development into a major metropolis in the modern era. Mexico City has a vibrant and diverse art and culture scene, with a rich blend of traditional and contemporary art. Given the city’s vastness, we chose to highlight hidden gems—places you didn’t know you needed to see—while still providing an overall sense of what the city offers. Each day highlights a different neighborhood or region of the city, and each night we stay in expansive suites in the very walkable Polanco neighborhood.

Mexico City is globally recognized as one of the world’s premier culinary capitals, celebrated for seamlessly blending centuries-old street food traditions with cutting-edge modernist fine dining. During this trip, travelers will have the opportunity to experience the range of this culinary diversity.

While the tour offers many unique scheduled experiences, its casual structure also provides daily opportunities for travelers to adjust the plans to match their interests and desired speed and intensity.

IDENTIFICATION ~ A passport valid for 6 months beyond the tour start date and that has at least 4 blank pages for entry/exit stamps is required.

ALTITUDE ~ Mexico City: 7,380 ft

WEATHER ~ Mexico City’s climate is moderate all year round – in April, night temperatures rarely drop below 50f and daytime highs are around 77f. April is the dry season, but brief afternoon showers are common.

OTHER ~ Electricity and cell phone service are extremely stable. We do not recommend drinking the tap water, however drinkable water is readily available. The air quality in Mexico City varies greatly, and especially during dry season it can be poor. Travelers with breathing conditions should consult their doctor before traveling to Mexico City.

PHYSICAL EXERTION ~ Low Exertion (2 of 5) – This tour consists mostly of moderately paced walking on city streets, with some transportation via van, subway, and taxi. Mexico in general, and Mexico City specifically, are not very accessible for those with mobility issues – many of the stops are not “handicap accessible”. There are some itinerary stops with stairs and no elevator options. If you have mobility concerns, consult with us before you book this tour.

Tuesday 4/6 – We greet you in Mexico City with a welcome dinner.

Wednesday 4/7 – Sunday 4/11 each day we explore a different zone or neighborhood of Mexico City. Days will include visits to museums, art galleries, artists' studios, cultural sites, restaurants, and shops, including:

• A walking tour of the Historic Center with stops at the Zocalo and Bellas Artes, plus lots of great architecture, history and art to enjoy.

• La Condesa and nearby neighborhoods, featuring multiple art galleries and artists' studios

• Coyoacan walking tour including stops at Casa Roja (Frida's family home) and Anahuacalli (museum of Diego Rivera's private collection)

• Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico with a walking tour of the architecture and murals of this UNESCO site and a visit to the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporaneo

• Guided tour of the Teotihuacán archeological site

• San Angel neighborhood, including a visit to the San Angel art market and the high-end shops surrounding it

• Chapultepec Park including the Anthropology Museum

• An optional add-on (extra cost) early morning Hot Air Balloon ride over the Teotihuacán Pyramids

This was a great trip that provided a perfect introduction to Mexico City. Camiba had all travel arranged and restaurant reservations for when we wanted them, so it took away all the anxiety of planning. We visited fabulous art galleries, walked the city and talked with folks. The food was delicious.
