      About this trip

      Atmospheric Landscape in Watercolor

This is one of the most favorite genres for watercolor artists. In this course we will analyze the three basic principles of landscape construction three rules without which it is simply impossible to create a convincing and expressive watercolor. You will learn how to create atmospheric landscapes by manipulating tonal values color and edge. Michael will show how to paint luminous landscape and how to add emotions to artwork. You will understand how to draw the right sketch and capture a picture in a dynamic and fresh style.
You can expect plenty of individual attention and helpful demonstrations all the time.

      About Michael Solovyev

Michael is often called a “sunny watercolorist” – his airy, transparent artworks look as though they emit the sunlight. His traditional academic art education, extensive experience as a head theater stage designer, and oil painter career now inform his priority as a watercolor artist – light. His main belief is that sometimes even a pile of rubbish with beautiful lighting can become an artwork. Michael is a watercolor artist of great renown, with exhibitions and workshops all over the world, from Bolivia to France to Australia.

Michael sees his work as an artist as exploration and observation of the world and its presentation in such way the others can see the things he saw – one of the most interesting jobs in the world. His stage designer background as provided two main insights fundamental for his subsequent watercolor artist career – understanding that the light is paramount to the art and the love for collective co-creation.

Watercolor is the most interesting medium to Michael because it is the only material on the whole planet where he is not solely responsible for the creative process. Rather than working alone, he forms a partnership with the water. Watercolor flows, permeates the medium, it exists in time as an alive being. Michael works together with the watercolor in a fascinating process of co-creation which leads to interesting outcomes. Such partnership does not exist in all other branches of visual arts.

Michael considers adrenaline and experimentation the necessities of the creative process, always challenging himself with new techniques, ideas, stories, and materials. Willingness to experiment and create led Michael to design his own line of watercolor materials and release a series of watercolor video lessons.

I can’t say enough good things about the experience I had at the David R. Daniels retreat through Artist Rising. The grounds and studio were beautiful, a real inspiration for creativity. Our hosts did everything to make us comfortable from delicious food to enjoyable conversation. Every detail was thoughtfully considered. Thank you so much for a wonderful week!

The artist retreat at Connecticut River Valley Inn was fabulous from beginning to end! It was in a beautiful setting filled with gorgeous landscaping everywhere you looked. The owner, Pat Brubaker, is an artist and that was evident from her attention to detail from the accommodations, table settings, fresh homemade meals, and the actual art studio. All of this was beyond my expectations, even though the website is very accurate! Our instructor, David Daniels, is a master teacher and extraordinary artist with decades of experience painting and teaching. I highly recommend taking a class with him. His style is casual, hands-on, and filled with ideas that you can put to use regardless of your level of experience. This artist retreat had a very positive impact on me personally and as an artist, so I'm very grateful for this wonderful experience!

I enjoyed my watercolor workshop week with David R Daniels. It was a really nice group of people to paint with and discuss ideas with. David's classes are relaxing and informative. The accommodation was cozy! Everyday we had three delicious meals and wine and dessert. The hosts Pat and Terry and Wayne were friendly and accommodating. I am planning another painting workshop for 2025 here.

I have attended several of David Daniels workshops but this was my 1st time at Artists Rising Retreats in Glastonbury CT. Although I didn't have the experience of staying in one of the Inn's beautiful guest rooms I was treated like family during the entire week I was attending a workshop on premise. Each day began with the delightful experience of enjoying breakfast outside on the covered patio surrounded by blooming flowers. This is also where lunch & dinner was served, unless the weather forced us to dine in the lovely dinning room inside. Every meals was delicious, prepared by the host who carefully acknowledged each guest dietary needs. Throughout the day we were welcome to grab a drink or snack if needed. The pathway to the studio was overflowing with gardens and private nooks for us to sit and sketch, read, sip our coffee or just relax in either the shade or the sun. The studio was a terrific space to paint in! The 3 walls of sliding glass doors filled the room with natural light and warmth. We were given access to the studio both day and night. David Daniels guided us through his process of painting from conception to completion in his friendly & knowledgeable style. He is a true master of painting with watercolor and he shares every bit of his many years of experience with his students. My painting skills have grown and improved because of his guidance. I look forward to attending another workshop at this outstanding artist retreat and inn. Many thanks to Pat, Wayne & Terri for making me feel more like family and less like a stranger during my stay. See you again soon!
