Bitterroot Backpacking is hosting a free guided hike to Morrell Falls in the Lolo National Forest. This 5.5 mi hike with 439 ft of elevation lake is scheduled for Sunday July 26th at 9:30 am! We will meet at the Morrell Falls Trailhead sign at that time! The entire trip will take about 3 - 4 hrs.
This hike is open to anyone! Anyone is welcomed to sign up!
This hike is rated "Easy" on AllTrails, which is accurate! The trail is flat or mildly graded most of the way and only has a few small hills to climb. If you are unsure of your ability, feel free to reach out email us at BitterrootBackpacking@gmail.com! We will take plenty of breaks!
The planned group size is 5 - 10 people. If the group is large enough, we will likely have two groups; a fast group, and a paced group. In that case, we will provide radios to keep the two groups connected while hiking.
The scenery on this hike is great! Most of it is through a burn area, which provides great views of the surrounding mountains, but does leave the trail a bit exposed to the Sun. The burn area also means this is a great location to catch Fireweed in bloom, which should be at the time of this hike!
Once we reach Morell Falls, we'll relax, eat lunch (BYO) and explore the area for about 45-60 min total. There is also a frog pond to spend time at! There may be fish in the pond, but I'm not sure!
After lunch, we will then turn around and head back down the same way we hiked up. The way down will be a bit quicker, but not too different.
This trail may have a few downed trees to hike around and climb over.
It is recommended that you wear comfortable, layered hiking clothing appropriate for the temperature that day. It is expected to be chilly in the morning and hot in the afternoon. It's ALWAYS a good idea to bring a raincoat on any day hike in Montana mountains! Hiking shoes or boots are highly recommended for this trail!
Please plan to carry your own equipment, water, and snacks. There are a few places to filter water along the trail, and the water at the lake is filterable too of course.
This hike is subject to cancellation due to thunderstorms for more than 3 hrs, high winds, wildfire, wildfire smoke, and/or if there are less than 2 participants.
There is a pit toilet at the trailhead, but none along the trail.
Dogs are welcome!
Look for the group standing around the Morrell Falls Trailhead sign at 9:30 am sharp!
