About this trip

This custom trip will be hosted by Marañón Experience, put together for Grow with the Flow, organised by Vera Knook- contact Vera for more information: or +31 6 125 24 381

There are two components to the trip: A multiday river trip and a possible add-on option exploring "the Kingdom of the Clouds' afterwards.

>>About the river trip<<
The Marañón River is one of the most unique river journeys on the planet. Isolated riverside villages, cascading waterfalls, natural swimming holes, ancient rock art, ruins, along with flora and fauna not found anywhere else on the planet.  Our tour through the Grand Canyon of South America will leave you wanting more.

This 7 day/ 8 night  whitewater rafting or kayaking trip in Peru offers a one-of-a kind blend of scenic river journey, cultural experience in local villages and brilliant whitewater; We will take you to the heart of the Marañón.

For kayakers, this trip is ideal to step up your game, gaining confidence on big water as we go. As the trip is raft supported, you will have an empty boat, while having the luxury of a delicious meal and a cold beer at camp. This is thé introduction to multi-day kayaking trips.

In case you have no or little whitewater experience, you have the option to join us on a raft. With the big amount of water on the Marañón, you will be sure of enough excitement, while also having the time to take in all impressive landscapes.

After 7 days on the river, it is time to get our legs working during a unique add-on option. We will use them to visit some unique places in the Kingdom of the Clouds, including a 771-meter waterfall, the ancient city of Kuelap and a cloudforest exploration to some hidden ancient ruins. We will be based in the town of Cocachimba in front of the Gocta waterfall and do an overnight hike to Kuélap, staying at the Huiquilla Conservation Area. Have a look at our day to day program for more detail.

This trip is happening in late May. Weather is usually warm, dry and sunny in the river canyon in high 20s or low 30s (degrees celsius).  There are some chances of rain, since it's the end of the rainy season.

Once you go up into the Kingdom of the Clouds you are surrounded by cloud forest where it is a bit cooler (bring a rain jacket!) . Days are normally warm and sunny, however there is always some possibility of rain.

We offer the finest whitewater rafting journeys down the Marañón River, Peru - Source of the Amazon and accompanying experiences in Northern Peru.

We had an absolutely incredible time with Luigi! He created a custom Peruvian experience for us. We started our trip in Pusste Copuma and saw nobody for the first 6 days. It was just us in the remote Andes. After the 7th day, we started to encounter more villages and people. Luigi has kept up great relationships with the locals; we were able to get hot meals and even beers along the river! I will never forget our 14-day Marañón trip. Thanks so so much for making it unforgettable.

Absolutely incredible experience! I have know Ben for quite a few years, but never gone on a trip with him and Luigi. I knew it would be fun and interesting -- but this really blew all expectations out of the water. The rafting was wildly fun. The food was fantastic. The camaraderie was great and we made lasting friendships. More than anything, Ben and Luigi shared their passion and knowledge of the area with us. It was an amazing experience.

What an amazing experience! This trip was better than I could have hoped for. The scenery, the guides, the food, the fun. It is obvious from the beginning that these guides are passionate about their work and about the river that they are working hard to protect. They are attentive, organized, and just all around excellent people to spend time with. Our 7 day experience combined a perfect mix of adventure, learning, and simply being. I will cherish my memories of the Maranon for a lifetime. Thank you Ben and Luigi!

We floated the Rio Maranon in October 2019 from Chagual to Puerto Malleta (13 days) with Maranon Experience. We found large sandy beaches, exciting rapids, beautiful scenery, good food and educational cultural experiences with local people. It was a row-your-own style trip with a group of our experienced river friends. Our guide Luigi was fantastic - very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, thoughtful, and fit right in with our group. We highly recommend this trip with Maranon Experience!

I absolutely loved my 7-day trip on the Maranon with Ben, Luigi, and company. The river itself was a perfect introduction to whitewater rafting, with the right balance of thrilling class IV rapids but the safety net of very experienced guides. The natural beauty of the canyon was stunning, with breathtaking views of the Andes around every corner. I really enjoyed the day hikes to lookouts and waterfalls. Connecting with local villagers (e.g., taking part in soccer games and fiestas) was also a highlight. And the food was far better than I thought possible for a large group camping trip. The guides themselves were super friendly and easy to get along with, extremely knowledgeable about the river, the local geography, and history of the region. They are clearly passionate about preserving the Maranon, and have done a fantastic job at creating an enivironmentally-friendly, ethical business. It was truly an experience of a lifetime!
