We will spend the morning visiting the Vatican Museums, where the Popes have preserved the greatest works of art of all time. During the visit, we will admire the Gallery of Candelabras, the Gallery of Tapestries, the Gallery of Maps, the Raphael Rooms, and the private chambers of Pope Julius II, decorated with significant frescoes by the great Renaissance painter. The highlight of the museum visit is the Sistine Chapel, associated with the name of the great Michelangelo. In the morning, we will participate in the Angelus prayer with the Pope. In the afternoon, we will visit the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, the first church dedicated to Marian worship. According to tradition, it holds the manger where Jesus was born, a revered relic that gives the church its other name, Santa Maria ad Praesepem. Inside, we can admire the 5th-century paleochristian mosaics and the stunning apse mosaic depicting the Coronation of the Virgin. In the morning, we will travel to Cascia to visit the Basilica of Saint Rita of Cascia, where the incorrupt body of this widely venerated saint is kept. From there, we will continue our journey to Assisi. Full board. Overnight in Assisi.
Today, we will visit Assisi, the birthplace of Saint Francis. We will head to the town center to visit the Basilica of Saint Clare and the Basilica of Saint Francis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, featuring paintings by Giotto and Cimabue. We will then visit the Lower Basilica, where the tomb of Saint Francis and his first disciples is located, along with the Cloister. Next, we will visit Santa Maria degli Angeli, a basilica that houses the Porziuncola. Full board. Overnight in Assisi.
In the morning, we will travel to Loreto for a city tour. The main monuments of Loreto are located around the central square: the Jesuit College, the Palazzo Comunale (formerly Palazzo Apostolico) designed by Bramante, which houses an art gallery with works by Lorenzo Lotto, Simon Vouet, and Annibale Carracci, as well as a collection of majolica. We will also visit the Sanctuary of the Holy House (Santuario della Santa Casa), where the Virgin of Loreto and her house from Nazareth are venerated, believed to have been brought by angels to Dalmatia and then to Loreto. In the morning, we will visit the Padre Pio Museum, the Sanctuary, and the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Afterwards, we will begin our journey back to Rome. Full board. Overnight in Rome.
In the morning, we will visit the Catacombs of San Callisto, where early Christians began to bury their dead, a poignant reminder of the tragic persecutions faced by the early Church in Rome. Next, we will head to the city center to see the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. We will then visit some of Rome's most iconic squares: the Spanish Steps, featuring the Column of the Immaculate Conception, the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See, Pietro Bernini’s “Barcaccia” Fountain, and the impressive marble staircase leading to the Trinità dei Monti Church. We’ll take a moment to enjoy the charm of Roman life on the Steps. Continuing along Via Condotti, we will reach Piazza della Colonna, then the Trevi Fountain, and finally Piazza Navona. Full board.
