The Qoyllur Rit’i festival takes place every year at the base of Mt Sinakara in the Ausangate area, just days before Corpus Christi is celebrated in Cusco. To celebrate the Qoyllur Rit’i Festival on this two-day trek, we depart on the Sunday, Monday or Tuesday before Corpus Christi (in 2024, this means the 26th, 27th or 28th of May).

Leaving Cusco at 5 am, we travel about 3 hours to Mahuayany (via Tinqui, the trailhead for the Ausangate trek) along the Transoceanic highway. The Qoyllur Rit’i Festival awaits! We pass through spectacular landscapes and stop for photos along the way at Urcos, Ccatcca and Ocongate.
We will have an early lunch with other pilgrims at Mahuayany (4600m), which will be bursting at the seams with visitors. Then, we start our hike up to the Sanctuary of Qoylloriti. The Sanctuary is located in a breathtaking spot, surrounded by snow-capped mountains.
We slowly hike 3-5h along an uphill trail following the 14 Stations of the Cross, the last one being located at the Sanctuary itself. In the evening, we can attend one of two services at the Sanctuary, at 6 pm or at 8 pm. We will have dinner and camp at the Sanctuary. Note: the Sanctuary is located at a very high altitude, so you should be well-acclimatized!
