Just a couple of hours from Quito, in the capital of Cotopaxi Province—Latacunga—lie two of the most important authentic indigenous markets in the central Andes, where people trade goods from tropical regions and highland farms.
On this 1-day shared tour, you will:
- Visit Saquisilí Market (on Thursdays) or Pujilí Market (on Sundays), both known for their vibrant energy and cultural richness.
- Travel to the Andean highlands at 3,800 meters (12,467 ft), where we will stop at a traditional indigenous hut and learn about the daily life of highland families.
- Continue to the community of Tigua, famous for its colorful handicrafts and sheepskin paintings, as well as its wooden animal masks. Agriculture and livestock also play a key role in their livelihoods.
- Make a scenic stop at the stunning Toachi River Canyon Viewpoint — a must for that perfect selfie! (They say, if you didn’t take a selfie here, you didn’t visit Quilotoa!)
- Arrive at the spectacular Quilotoa Lagoon, located inside a volcanic crater and known for its emerald-colored waters. The peaceful surroundings attract yoga and meditation lovers, and it’s even a popular site for engagements and weddings.
We will visit the Community Viewpoint, which provides direct access to the crater and the lagoon. You’ll have time to hike down to the water and explore the site at your own pace. Adventurers can enjoy kayaking at 3,914 meters (12,841 ft) or even take a refreshing (and bold!) dip in its cold waters.
