Today, we travel to Augusta Emerita (modern Mérida), the imperial capital of Lusitania, where Rome’s grandeur is on full display. A city built for retired Roman soldiers, Mérida boasts some of the best-preserved Roman monuments in all of Hispania. We will stand before the magnificent theater, where tragedies and comedies were performed for the elite, marvel at the colossal amphitheater, and cross the Puente Romano, one of the longest Roman bridges still standing.
The remains of temples, aqueducts, and the triumphal Arch of Trajan transport us to the days when this city was a jewel of the empire, a beacon of Roman civilization in the Iberian Peninsula.
