About this trip

Join us for a powerful cultural immersion in honor of the strength, artistry, and spiritual resilience of the Gullah people. Set against the rich landscape of Savannah, Georgia, and the South Carolina Sea Islands, Roots & Revival is more than a retreat—it’s a journey through sacred stories, ancestral traditions, and hands-on creativity. A retreat rooted in craft, history, and the spirit of survival.

Trip Highlights:

This unique experience invites you to:

  • Explore the legacy of the Gullah Geechee people through a guided heritage tour of significant sites, including praise houses, plantations, and one of the nation’s first schools for formerly enslaved people.
  • Connect with craft by choosing a hands-on workshop in either Indigo Batik Dyeing or Sweetgrass Weaving—traditional Gullah artforms that carry centuries of cultural meaning.
  • Reflect, learn, and honor the roots of survival and revival as you walk through history and make something with your own hands.

On my first trip to Ghana in 1999, I co-organized a Rites of Passage research study tour. Through this experience, I founded a non-profit organization and have since created Nomadic Noni a travel resource that navigates you through the African Diaspora to discover the cultural connections through educational and travel experiences.

Had a great time. Lodging was in a great neighborhood. Food cooking experience was the highlight of the trip for me. The education from the tour guide on Brazil was awesome.

It was by far the best trip I have taken in many years. It was well organized and curated specifically with our group in mind. Theresa was attentive and personable. I got exactly what I wanted from this trip, which I have want to take for 30 years. This experience far exceeded my expectations. Thank you, Theresa for making this a truly memorable experience.
