Our days will include (optional!) morning movement, plus a daily excursion or experience. You'll encounter the history of the land and people of Iona as we explore the island, and you'll be invited to experience a range of spiritual and contemplative practices as you sink into the presence of this very special place.
Start the day with an hour-long gentle yoga session, or enjoy a quiet morning on your own.
After breakfast, we’ll gather together to prepare for the day’s adventure – perhaps an excursion to one of the island’s sacred sites, such as Columba’s Bay, the ruins of the ancient nunnery, or the lesser-known Hermit’s Cell. To help us appreciate the beauty of the island more fully and to understand its history, we’ll be joined, on occasion, by former island resident and guide, Simon de Voil.
After lunch and a rest break, we’ll come back together for a reflective practice, a short excursion, some playful and soul-filling dance, or a relaxing restorative yoga session.
We’ve set aside several afternoons for free time, so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to relax or explore the island at your own pace. We highly recommend a boat trip to the beautiful uninhabited Isle of Staffa, where you can enjoy bird and wildlife watching and hear the wave-song of Fingal’s Cave. Take a guided tour to discover the rich history of our next-door neighbor, the archeological treasure of Iona Abbey. You might enjoy an excellent coffee from the Iona Craft Shop, a trip to Iona’s Heritage Centre, or a visit to some of the other art and handicraft shops on the island. On a sunny day, take a short wander to the quiet of the island’s North End, or a longer hike across the island to the beach at Port Ban. If clouds and rain are rolling through, you can cozy up for afternoon tea in the cafe at the Argyll or sip a glass of wine at St Columba’s hotel, just a short walk away, or stay and spend the afternoon reading in the Bishop’s House library.
After dinner, you’ll have time to unwind. Whether that means joining the evening service at Iona Abbey, heading over to the pub for a pint, or simply sitting on the shore listening to the waves roll — that’s up to you!
