      About this trip

The Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is an excellent option for those who want to experience the Inca Trail but don't have the time or stamina for a longer hike. The Short Inca Trail starts at km 104 and passes through incredible scenery, including the lush cloud forest, the Rio Urubamba River valley, and several small Inca ruins. The highlight of the trail, however, is undoubtedly Machu Picchu itself. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of Peru's most popular tourist destinations, and for a good reason. The ancient city is an incredible feat of engineering, and its setting in the Andes Mountains is breathtaking.

Highlights of the Short Inca Trail:

      • Hike the world-famous Inca Trail in 1 day
      • Arrive at Machu Picchu twice (sunset & sunrise)
      • Support Social Project that helps education as you travel
      • Return on the Vistadome Panoramic trains.

      Itinerary

      Hike the Inca Trail
      Day 1: Cusco – Ollantaytambo – Km 104 – Machu Picchu (16km, 8 hrs)

We began our journey at 4:00 am with a pick-up from our hotel in Cusco. We drive for about an hour and a half to the small town of Ollantaytambo, where we board the Expedition train to Km 104, the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu entrance. The hike from Km 104 to Machu Picchu is about 16km (10 miles) and takes around 7 hours. It is a relatively easy hike but can be challenging at times due to the altitude. Along the way, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the Andes mountains and the lush vegetation of the Amazon rainforest. When you finally reach Machu Picchu, you will be able to explore this world-famous Inca site at your own pace. You will also want to take many photos to remember this incredible experience!

This trip was absolutely amazing and exceeded my expectations. Our tour guides, Pepe and Gilbert, were available at every moment, extremely knowledgeable, and passionate about providing a great experience for all the hikers. The porters are basically superhuman and extremely committed to ensuring the success of the trip. Our head chef, Balbino, delivered the most decadent, multi-course meals I’ve ever had, let alone in the middle of the Peruvian Andes. I feel the experience and included services/amenities were well worth the price.

We did the Inca Trail with a group of friends & had a great time with our guides Juan De Dios & Sara. We were kept informed the whole time and had a great experience. Our trek ended up having some medical challenges, but our guides took incredibly good care of us & ensured everyone was safe. Their care and concern helped reduce the stress of these challenges - and we’re very grateful for that. The service was above expectations. The food was always tasty and creative, keeping us excited for the next meal. The porters all did an incredible job at keeping us comfortable at camp. While this was a challenging journey, it was absolutely worth it and made lifelong memories. Many many thanks to Juan De Dios & Sara. I would definitely recommend TreXperience.
