Discover the dramatic mountain landscapes, remote valleys and timeless villages of Georgia’s Svaneti region. This itinerary combines vibrant Tbilisi with one of the Caucasus’ most iconic multi-day trekking routes, offering a balance of challenging mountain days, rich cultural encounters and stays in traditional family-run guest houses.
This adventure is moderately challenging, ideal for regular walkers who enjoy full days on the trail. Several days involve up to 900–1,000 metres of ascent, and distances range from 10–16km. The trek includes forest paths, open pastures, river crossings and high-alpine terrain.
Hikers should be comfortable with sustained climbs, varied terrain and spending several days in remote mountain villages.
During the trek you’ll stay in traditional Svan family guest houses in Zhabeshi, Adishi, Khalde and Ushguli. These offer a genuine local experience rather than hotel-style comfort.
Important details:
You may choose private occupancy (single room) or shared occupancy.
Most guest houses provide ensuite facilities for private rooms, but at least one guest house does not offer ensuite bathrooms, meaning you may need to share facilities with 10–15 other guests.
These accommodations have no official rating. Expect simple, rustic comfort, homemade meals prepared by host families, and the everyday atmosphere of local village life.
Nights in Tbilisi and Mestia are more conventional, with ensuite rooms available whether you book private or shared occupancy.
Travellers can choose from two arrival patterns:
UK flights often arrive in Tbilisi very early on 12 August (around 02:00–05:30).
Please be aware:
Accommodation will not be open for check-in at these hours.
You will need to entertain yourself, keep your luggage with you, or request luggage storage if available.
Arriving early gives you more time to explore Tbilisi before the official check-in time.
A later arrival allows for a calm check-in and an evening in Tbilisi before the long transfer to Mestia the next day.
We will offer suggested flights to help with planning.
