About this trip

**  SOLD OUT ** (Please contact us re future retreats ?)  Immerse yourself in the beauty and the cultural heritage of Guatemala. We are thrilled to be returning for our sixth retreat on the magnificent Lake Atitlán. This retreat also highlights the colorful Giant Kite Festival and the happy Día de los Muertos celebrations - two festive experiences of indigenous and Guatemala culture.

[[  June 2018: We were saddened by the suffering caused by the eruption of Volcán de Fuego. If you would like to contribute to helping people put their lives back together, one of the organizations recommended by our friends in Guatemala is Yo Me Uno, who are administered by UNICEF and who are collecting funds for those in need.  We are looking forward to returning to Guatemala in October, to contribute in our own way, through our yoga retreat. ]]

Guatemala Yoga Retreat - join Julie Murphy and Karen Pagano to celebrate the light within!

Become curious about taking your yoga beyond your mat, as you reconnect with the magic of life. Reveal an energized, more balanced you, as you rediscover the beauty of life and see yourself reflected in it.

Discover new sources of vitality and return home feeling vibrantly alive.

** WHAT WE'LL EXPLORE **

•  A full Yin Yoga Immersion, creating space within the connective tissues of the body and the mind

•  Yoga Nidra Awakening, setting your life on a vibrant course through the power of intention

•  Conscious Breath (Pranayama) to stoke your life force and burn away what no longer serves you

•  Playful exploration, philosophical discussion, and embracing the universal heart within as you claim your rightful happiness

In between yoga time, let stress dissolve as you hike, swim, kayak, enjoy a spa treatment…or simply gaze at the ever-changing colors of the lake.

** ABOUT OUR ECO-RESORT ON THE LAKE**

Our retreat hideaway is safe and secluded, with no vehicles or traffic, at 5,100' above sea level in the highlands of Guatemala. We have chosen Lomas de Tzununá, with the most dramatically beautiful views we’ve seen on any of our many Lake Atitlán visits. Maria and Thiérry describe it as “A View with a Room” - and they’re right!

This family-run wellness resort is secluded and intimate, dedicated to providing the perfect sanctuary for a peaceful getaway. Thierry and Maria are also committed to the local community, working to improve literacy rates and increase opportunity for learning and earning.

All rooms have private bathrooms, and private balconies with spectacular views of the lake.

If you’re reserving a double room, please confirm details of your roommate when making your reservation. We may be able to pair you up with a roommate — please ask us!

** ABOUT OUR CULTURAL EXCURSIONS  **

Sumpango Giant Kite Festival: Experience a taste of Guatemalan culture as we visit this famous annual festival. Here, we’ll see giant kites made of cloth and paper that the local communities have been working on for months. This age-old practice has its roots in ancient Mayan culture, with intricate patterns and designs of religious and folklore themes. The kites convey  inspirational  messages of unity, love, faith, respect for traditions, and respect for Mother Earth.

Día de los Muertos Celebration: All Saints Day, also known as Day of the Dead, is the perfect mix of indigenous and Guatemala culture coming together. It is a day when Guatemalans remember and celebrate their deceased loved ones — but it’s far from a sad occasion. The festivities unfold in an explosion of color and life-affirming joy, demonstrating love and respect for passed family. We will enjoy this celebration with a local guide who will explain the traditions and meanings of the local festivities.

About Us

The connection between Julie and Karen as soul sisters elevates their teaching to a place of joy and delight, plus a fair bit of laughter. Individually, here’s more about us:

Karen Pagano is considered one of the pioneers of Yin Yoga in South Florida. She fell in love with yoga over 25 years ago and completed her 200-hour certification in Seattle, WA and Bali. Karen’s joyous delivery helps students to laugh at their quirks and celebrate their victories, on and off the mat. Her favorite yoga phrase is, "Come Om to yourself”, as yoga brings us back to the happy person that is our essence. This is Karen’s foundation of teaching in Yin, Hatha and Yoga of Sound.

Julie Murphy discovered the joy of yoga in her home country, South Africa. Many Oms later, she completed her 200-hour certification in the US and began teaching in 2007. Her 500-hour studies took her to India for a deeper understanding of yoga. Julie is also editor of Today’s Yoga magazine and is well known for her soothing voice and Yoga Nidra recordings, enjoyed by thousands on Insight Timer. She is inspired by yoga as a way for anyone to reach their full potential—in body, mind and spirit.

Julie: originally from South Africa and in a former life I was a business exec. Yoga Nidra meditation is ‟my thing” - I am thrilled at how my recordings are enjoyed by thousands around the world, such as on the Insight Timer app (search "Yogaressa") In my spare time, you may find me cuddling dogs, sipping fermented grape juice, and watching Dancing With The Stars (true confession) It's exciting and hugely fulfilling for my dear friend, Karen Pagano, and I, to create yoga retreats in fabulous destinations around the world. Julie and Karen demonstrated exceptional qualities in handling the unpredictable situation of the earthquake. They provided support to those affected by trauma, adapted the itinerary, and assisted me with my new condition of BPPV (Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo). Despite these challenges, we had a wonderful time. This was my fourth yoga retreat with Karen and Julie. Once again, the venue was fantastic, the people were helpful and kind, the Moroccan food was delicious, and the accommodations were spacious and comfortable. I am truly grateful for this incredible experience.

I recently had the privilege of attending the Marrakesh Retreat with Karen and Julie. I can't express enough how impressed I was with the experience, especially given the unexpected challenge of an earthquake during our stay. Julie and Karen, the retreat organizers, indeed went above and beyond to ensure that our trip remained a memorable and positive experience. The earthquake could have easily thrown our entire Retreat into chaos. Still, the situation was handled with grace and efficiency thanks to Julie and Karen's professionalism, quick thinking, and genuine care. They immediately prioritized our safety and emotional well-being as their top concern and reassured us with their calm and composed demeanor. Not only did Julie and Karen respond to the earthquake excellently, but they also managed to pivot our Retreat into something beautiful when it was deemed safe. They took this unexpected challenge as an opportunity to create an even more unique and memorable experience for all of us. Their adaptability was remarkable, from picking a beautiful, safe location to adjusting the schedule to accommodate everyone's needs and preferences, always keeping a country in mourning and dealing with a crisis in mind. Throughout the rest of the Retreat, Julie and Karen provided a warm and nurturing environment, ensuring we felt supported and comfortable. The activities they planned were not only fun and engaging but also allowed us to connect with the local culture and community in a meaningful way. In the face of adversity, the Marrakesh Retreat became a testament to Julie and Karen's unwavering dedication and skill. Their ability to hold space for all of us and pivot under pressure, turning what could have been a disaster into an unforgettable experience, is commendable. I can't thank them enough for their incredible work, and I highly recommend going on Retreat with them to anyone seeking a transformative and enriching journey. It's a testament to the power of resilience and the incredible leadership of these two remarkable women.

Rebecca, thank you so much for taking the time to write this expansive review of our extraordinary time together on our Morocco retreat. You captured it all - the reality and impact of the earthquake, as well as the truly special memories we created in this beautiful country. Thank you for believing and trusting in Karen and in me. Thank you, also, for seeing the turn of events as an opportunity to truly practice the tools of yoga, mindfulness, and meditation - off the mat and in the real world. It was a tremendous reminder of how we are not in control, wasn't it!! And yet, we loved how our group bounced back; with laughter, with compassion, and with gratitude for everything that life is. "Transformative and enriching" is high praise indeed, and it's exactly the type of yoga journey we love to co-create. We're so pleased you experienced this in Morocco.

Despite travel difficulties and an earthquake on the first night, Julie and Karen made it a memorable, profound and pleasurable retreat. They were able to comfort us and help restore our peace of mind. I'm sure it would have been a fine retreat in any case, but their steady leadership turned it into a once-in-a-lifetime trip!

Thank you, Lona. Yes, a once-in-a-lifetime experience, in so many ways! After the unexpected and devastating earthquake, we are grateful we were all able to turn to what we know best … the tools of yoga, which always help to shift mind, mood, perspective; and ultimately transformed the retreat into a meaningful and happy time. We’re so happy you got so much out of this retreat!

I am still basking in the sienna afterglow of the Umbrian hillside!! This trip was incredible!! Julie and Karen were amazing and our practice in the peaceful setting of Locanda de Gallo was spectacular. We grazed on fabulous farm to table meals with fresh ingredients from Fabrizio’s garden, saw the most breathtaking sights in neighboring Gubbio and Assisi and most of all met the fabulous women to share the experience with! Can’t wait for our next journey together!! Namaste🧘‍♀️❤️❤️
