Joan Hyman's grounded teaching style seamlessly supports her students as they emerge from their practice with the rich and bright energy that yoga has to offer. Joan’s teachings come from an organic and intuitive place, as she draws upon the combination studies of Ashtanga and Iyengar yoga as well as Ayurveda, and meditation. The trip was enlightening, transformational and the exact experience I was seeking. Joan was knowledgeable, reliable and quick to respond to any inquiries. She made suggestions that would likely ensure smooth travel; I followed them and it worked. She is great at what she does; a true guru! The accommodations were comfortable and the food was delicious. I am grateful to have found Joan 🙏

Joan Hyman is amazing! Just spent 2 weeks learning more about Yoga and really kicking my own practice into high gear. Great training, great group of people, and an amazing teacher. We've already booked an upcoming retreat with Joan later in the year.

The transformative experience offered by the School of Yoga, under the masterful guidance of its founder, Joan, was truly exceptional. The setting for this enriching retreat was a haven of tranquility; the retreat center itself was impeccably maintained, boasting lush, stunning grounds that provided a perfect backdrop for deep practice and introspection. Crucially, the center's location was ideally situated, offering easy access to a breathtaking, semi-private beach resort in the vibrant coastal region of Goa, India, allowing for moments of peaceful contemplation by the ocean. A significant benefit of this program was the intimate and personalized atmosphere fostered by a diverse international group of students. This smaller setting encouraged profound personal interaction, creating a strong sense of community and providing ample opportunity for one-on-one engagement with both peers and the truly exceptional yoga maestro, Joan. Joan's daily classes were masterfully structured, going far beyond simple physical exercise. Her curriculum for the program was a comprehensive journey, seamlessly blending the intellectual with the physical and spiritual. Each session incorporated a deep dive into yoga history and philosophy, dynamic and creatively sequenced flow practices, dedicated strength-building exercises, deeply restorative guided meditation, and essential, detailed instruction on breathing techniques (pranayama). A hallmark of her teaching was the meticulous attention paid to structural alignment, with detailed corrections provided to ensure the safety and efficacy of every posture. I wholeheartedly and without reservation recommend Joan’s comprehensive yoga teachers programs and her profoundly insightful retreats. The School of Yoga is not merely a place of practice; it is a source of the profound wisdom and authentic transformation that Joan so generously and the profound wisdom she shares through the School of Yoga. Many thanks and looking forward to the upcoming classes in March 2026 and future retreats.

What a wonderful experience! Two weeks of amazing yoga, inspiring lectures and discussions, and time spent with a like-minded international community - surrounded by the jungle, the ocean, and good vibes everywhere. We started each day with amazing yoga classes guided by Joan, who has always been a very special teacher for me. Being in her classes feels deeply familiar, yet there is always something new to learn. After a brunch and some time to ourselves, which I mostly spent by and in the ocean, we had very interesting lectures, and I am always amazed by the boundless passion and dedication to yoga that Joan embodies. Before watching Goa’s beautiful sunsets, we slowed down with restoratives, meditation, or a program led by inspiring guest teachers. Mandrem, where the training took place, was perfect because after dinner we had time to enjoy Ayurvedic treatments, go shopping or just sit and listen to the sound of the ocean. It was wonderful to share all of this with others, and I am deeply touched by how, in just two weeks, strangers become friends and form a real bond. I am forever grateful for this experience and will always look back on this trip with a full heart.

Joan and I have known each other for a while; she is a yoga teacher, and I am her student. I am aware of the context of yoga philosophy and the Sanskrit term Aparigraha, " no attachment." which encourages not being overly attached to outcomes, etc., or even relationships; however, it is very challenging for me not to be "attached" to Joan. She is one of the best Yoga teachers in Los Angeles and one of my favorites. She is knowledgeable about her craft and exudes kindness everywhere she goes. Always with a smile. A one-hour vinyasa class with her is not for the faint of heart. Additionally, she is my "personal Waldo," as I constantly try to keep track of her whereabouts during her yoga retreats around the world; however, this time, I was able to participate in one of her retreats in Nepal- 14 days of yoga and trekking-amazing teacher and beautiful Country. When she is in Los Angeles, she teaches at the Center for Yoga studio in Larchmont. Thanks, Joan, for sharing your knowledge and love of yoga with your students. Much love, alba
