A Fusion of Education, Design, and Cultural Immersion
Nestled in the charming coastal town of Kokrobite in Ghana, the Kokrobite Institute is a sanctuary of innovation, cultural preservation, and education, offering a transformative experience for individuals and groups. Founded by the visionary Renee Neblett, an African American from Boston, the institute represents an exceptional commitment to nurturing creativity, fostering interdisciplinary learning, and celebrating Ghana's cultural heritage.
The Kokrobite Institute executes collaborative, resourceful design projects which promote self sustainability in the community, such as furniture, lighting, clothing, jewelry and more using primarily recycled & natural materials like denim, glass bottles, & laterite (red earth).
Throughout the years, the Kokrobite Institute has evolved into a hub of innovation and cultural exchange. It has hosted a range of programs, from teacher institutes and internship opportunities to postgraduate courses, supporting sustainable development, holistic education, and traditional cultural knowledge.
Local Ethnic Group - Ga-Dangme: Kokrobite is situated in the Greater Accra Region, predominantly inhabited by the Ga-Dangme ethnic group. The Ga-Dangme people have a rich cultural heritage, renowned for their vibrant music, dance, and colorful festivals. One of their most celebrated festivals is the Homowo, which marks the harvest season and involves traditional dances and the sharing of the famous "Kpokpoi" dish. The people are known for their warm hospitality and traditional beliefs, and their connection to the sea plays a significant role in their culture, reflected in their fishing practices and coastal traditions.
