Tikal is the largest excavated site in the American continent, it is the Quintessential Classic Maya site, a UNESCO declared World Heritage site in 1979. It comprises 576 square kilometers or 222 square miles of tropical rainforest, surrounding the ceremonial center of this ancient Maya capital, which was mysteriously and abruptly abandoned around 820 AD, after having been inhabited for almost one century.
