Enjoy comfortable Inns and Refugios while running through Italy and Switzerland on the spectacular Tour des Combins route. This route affords views of the magnificent Mont Blanc while running alongside mighty glaciers, circumnavigating the immense Grand Combins at over 14,000 feet, spending the first 3 nights in spectacularly located remote mountain huts and finding stretches of magical mountain trail running! Join us for more of the most extraordinary trail running in the world!
The Tour des Combins is becoming one of the most epic routes in the world, on par with the Tour du Mont Blanc. In fact, many consider the Tour des Combins the Tour du Mont Blanc's less popular (that's a good thing!), shorter, wilder and equally as handsome "Little Brother." On this tour you will tackle the entire route around the mighty Grand Combins, staying in comfortable Inns and Refugios along the way. You'll begin your adventure, as we do the Tour du Mont Blanc, with a gondola ride from Le Chable in the Verbier valley, up to a dramatic restaurant and viewpoint (with views of Mont Blanc!) high above the valley, and begin your run in a counter-clockwise direction finishing where you started with a gondola ride back down to finish the tour. As with all of our running tours, you will truly embrace the trail and the area you're running through. This means you'll be staying in nice, traditional and historic inns along the way, with the first 3 nights in remote Refugios that are famous throughout Europe. You'll truly immerse yourselves in the culture of the trail with your stays in the Refugios, sleeping alongside your trail companions! With the first 3 night in remote refugios, you'll be required to carry a bit larger pack (approximately 20 to 30 Liters), but you'll still have all of your meals and bedding provided at the hut. You'll stay in comfortable hotels with luggage access the last two nights at the Grand St. Bernard Pass and Bourg St. Pierre. This tour is one of the most Epic we've ever offered, and is on par with the Tour du Mont Blanc. If you've already run the Tour du Mont Blanc, you will NOT want to miss this trip of a lifetime!
Difficulty: Advanced - This tour presents a significant challenge with its rugged and steep trails. The Tour des Combins includes significant elevation change, rugged trails, long climbs and descents, high elevation, navigation challenges, little access to support vehicle, and potential hazardous weather. Be prepared to depart early on your longest days. You will need to carry a running pack between 20 and 30 Liters on the first 3 days as you will be staying in remote mountain refuges without access to your luggage. You will be running 6 days with distances between 10.5 and 15 miles.
On the Tour des Combins we stay in a mixture of comfortable hotels and inns and remote refugios. Our hotel and inn accommodations will generally offer rooms with two full or twin size beds with private bath in each room. The remote refugios are located in some of the most spectacular mountain scenery possible with dormitory style lodging, shared bathrooms and less privacy. These remote refugios are a classic part of any Tour des Combins and should be experienced for their hospitality and companionship. We will be staying in remote mountain refugios on the first 3 nights of our tour and you will need to carry a larger 20 to 30 Liter pack on these days without access to your luggage. The last two nights will be in comfortable hotels and inns with access to your luggage. Single supplements are nearly impossible to accommodate on the Tour des Combins and generally you will be sharing a room with another person or the group. Our mix of accommodations are an essential part of any mountain tour in Europe!
On the Tour des Combins most of our accommodations will provide Half-Board. This means that we'll have dinner and breakfast provided by our hosts. These hearty and delicious meals are based on local cuisine and often locally sourced. Breakfasts are typical of Europe, heavy on bread, cheeses and meats. One night we will be responsible for our own dinner - when we meet the first night in Le Chable. Sack lunches for the trail can be provided upon request at an additional cost from our remote refugios. On the Tour des Combins, it is advised to request a sack lunch on the first 3 days when we'll be staying in remote refugios since there will not be as many locations for lunch along the trail. There are midway stops for snacks and lunch at only a couple of the days along the Tour des Combins.
Trip support, luggage transfers, mapping assistance, all breakfasts and dinners at our inns, all lodging during the tour, support vehicle, group gear, first aid, permits, fees, round trip Le Brevent cable car passes, train passes during trip if necessary, reservations and licenses. Group gear includes cookstoves, dishes, cutlery, camp chairs, water, firewood, portable hot shower, foam roller, maps, group first aid and satellite communication devices for emergencies and staff communication. Not all group gear is provided or needed on our lodge based tours.
Trip does not include airfare or other transportation to and from the departure site, lodging before or after the tour, or most snacks and lunches on the trail. Dinner our first night in Le Chable is out on the town and at the runners expense. Bag lunches, snacks for the trail and refreshments along our route each day will also be at the runners expense. You should carry money with you on the trail if you intend to purchase refreshments or lunches at the refugios, huts and villages along the trail. It should be noted that you will be able to purchase a bag or picnic lunch for the trail to take with you each day. Relying on the refugios along the way can be risky if they are very busy or happen to be closed. The refugios do however make great stops along the way for rest and refreshments when available. Any specialty supplements or nutrition systems are not provided by Adventure Running Co.
