We had an incredible jungle adventure! Our guide Jose was very knowledgeable! He showed us things you can eat and drink so we got to taste the jungle too! He had a great eye to notice plants and animals we would have missed and didn’t even know about. We did many nature tours in Costa Rica but we learned more on this hike while getting to experience hiking and camping in the jungle. We worked up quite an appetite hiking up the mountain on the first day. Our host in Piedras Blancas was so generous and fed us way more good food then we could’ve ever eaten! We had a truly memorable experience and highly recommend this hike for experienced hikers. It was not an easy trek but totally worth it! The second day was a little easier hiking. Hiking more than 15 miles in the jungle was the most unforgettable part of our trip! Getting to rest during the 2+ hour drive back from Carate after we hiked out was a great bonus! Definitely recommend this experience but you should book it with transportation because it’s about a 2.5 hour drive back to the starting point! Which is an expensive car ride if you could even get one to drive the rough road out to Carate.

This guided hike, led by our wonderful guide Rolando, was our favorite jungle experience in Costa Rica. It is a challenging hike, but totally worth it if you are physically able. Rolando went out of his way many times to look for animals and birds. The path is not well travelled, so at times he used his machete to clear the way to make it easier. We got lucky and saw howler monkeys and squirrel monkeys and many beautiful birds. The lunch that we purchased was a traditional Costa Rican lunch, wrapped up in a banana peel, which worked out great and was delicious. Unlike the tour that we went on two days later at Sirena, there were no other people. The only thing that was frustrating was finding the place to meet our guide. He actually found us! Give yourself plenty of time to find the starting place. This hike is highly recommended for anyone who wants an authentic jungle hike where you can see lots of wildlife and gorgeous views of the jungle.
