TROPICAL MARINE CONSERVATION CAMP - INTERNSHIP

LANG TENGAH ISLAND 

 

The primary location is on Lang Tengah Island.  This 12-week Internship programme will provide you with a meaningful and valuable learning experience. You would be trained on various aspects of conservation work which include hands-on fieldwork, social media strategy, and development, awareness outreach, fundraising, and marketing. You will be working alongside our dedicated and passionate team of conservationists who will be sharing with you their rich knowledge and experience.

Project Aim

The primary focus of the Marine Camp project is the monitoring and relocation of turtle nests on the island, and coral rehabilitation 

 

Work Description

Your main role will be to become a fully integrated team member, which may include, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Conduct nightly patrols on nesting beaches to record nesting activities, biometric and photo-ID data of nesting females, relocate nests (if necessary), and mark the nests.
  • Inputting data gathered during nest monitoring, relocations, nest checks, and post-emergence inspections.
  • Monitor turtle nests and conduct post-emergence nest excavation to determine hatching and emergence success.
  • Carry out coral research and monitoring dives.
  • Give informative talks to resort guests about sea turtles, conservation, and the organisation.
  • Help to coordinate and carry out beach cleanups and outreach programmes involving schools and corporate groups.
  • Train and lead the volunteers in all activities, including taking volunteers on leisure excursions (jungle trekking, snorkeling, kayaking).
  • Update LTTW social media platforms (e.g., Facebook and Instagram).
  • Ensure the Research Station is kept clean and tidy; ensure there is enough water to drink and food to eat; as well as partake in other daily chores such as cleaning and stock-taking.
  • Adhere to all safety measures, protocols, procedures, and budgets as directed by LTTW.
  • Assist in any other duties that may be required, including covering for team member’s leave and illness, shopping for project supplies, and participating in local events.

You should be relatively fit and acquainted with the rigours of outdoor living and be prepared to participate in all our conservation activities, which can be fairly physically demanding. As part of a small team, you are also expected to provide cover for other interns.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

 General Requirements

  • Good knowledge of English
  • Good knowledge of Malay and Mandarin is an advantage
  • Organized and have strong attention to details
  • Able to live and work in a small team as well as individually when necessary
  • Expect to work long hours throughout the day and night, often with irregular or little sleep
  • Eager to learn about marine biology and conservation, specifically sea turtle biology, ecology and conservation
  • Experience in public outreach and engagement preferred
  • Have initiative and possess flexible and adaptive approaches to problems
  • Culturally sensitive
  • Confident swimmer
  • Being a certified diver is an advantage
  • Must be competent in Windows OS and Microsoft Office

All meals

All daily meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner consisting of rice, pasta or potatoes, accompanied by fresh vegetables, fruit and sauces

Dormitory accommodation

The accommodation consists of tent beds covered with mosquito netting, protected from the elements within an open-air sleeping hut; or tents situated around the campsite.

Diving

If applicable, cost of diving equipment.

What's not included

Boat transfer

Cost of the ferry to and from the island is extra. Ameen Boat Services (40-50 minutes): approx. RM60

Transport

Any transport to and from MERANG JETTY should be arranged by the intern. NOTE: Not to be confused with Marang Jetty.
