My time volunteering with Project Borneo and the Matang Wildlife Centre was truly life-changing. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed, supported, and deeply inspired by the extraordinary work being done to care for orangutans, sun bears, gibbons, pangolins, and so many other beings who deserve protection and compassion. It was a life changing month of service!
A very special shout-out goes to Michelle, the volunteer coordinator, who helped make this entire experience possible. Michelle went above and beyond to support me, including helping arrange opportunities for extra volunteer work and meaningful engagement with the animals and staff. Her kindness, organization, patience, and dedication created an environment where volunteers could genuinely learn, contribute, and grow. She is a true force of heart behind this program.
As a social scientist, grief therapist, yoga therapist, and sound practitioner, I came to Borneo hoping to learn more about primate conservation and trauma-informed care for animals. What I discovered was far greater than I expected. The staff and volunteers welcomed curiosity, collaboration, and creativity. I left with a deeper understanding of conservation, rehabilitation, and the emotional complexity of our fellow primates.
There is something profoundly moving about waking up each day surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest while witnessing people devote their lives to healing and protecting vulnerable animals. The experience reminded me that hope is still alive in this world through small acts of service, teamwork, and compassion.
Thank you to Michelle, the entire Project Borneo team, and the staff at Matang Wildlife Centre for your generosity, wisdom, and tireless work. I will carry this experience with me for the rest of my life and hope to continue supporting this beautiful mission however I can.
Highly, highly recommended for anyone seeking an authentic, meaningful, and unforgettable volunteer experience.
