About your trip

The Perhentian Eco-Education Project focuses on educating the locals on sustainable living and the tourists on eco-friendly travels. They also aim to produce the islands' own future Eco-leaders. The project works most with the local kids through their Eco Club. Rooted from Dr Jane Goodall's Roots and Shoots programme, the Eco Club runs classes and activities with its members to promote conservation of their beautiful islands and marine lives and also to improve their English.

You will be joining the team and the Eco Club members in their Coral Watch - where they snorkel every week to assess the health of corals in order to see the impact of pollution and tourism activities on the corals and during their Kayak Patrols - where they kayak around the village to make sure the waters are clear of rubbish and unnatural products.

You will also be working with the team to plan lessons and activities to carry out lessons for the Eco Club members. Every week, the project holds classes for Senior and Junior Eco Club members.

Apart from that, you will also be learning and interacting a lot with the community through Malay Dinners and Kuih Making sessions and even just in your day to day life during your volunteering as the project is located in the village and it works closely with the community. It is surely a different view and experience from the tourists' focused experience that the Perhentian Islands are known for.
