I had a great time both in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, making for a nice contrast between historical cities and natural environments. Bonus points in Tajikistan for picking up a couple of hitchhikers, making for great company and a great demonstration of Central Asian hospitality

It was a wonderful tour and I'm thrilled that I got to experience all 5 Stans. They were all so different. The guides and drivers were amazing with a special shout out to my Turkmenistan guide, Raim Jabarow. He went above and beyond to make my trip truly special.

We had a good and interesting trip with Steppe Journeys. The level of hotels was very good overall with non hotels such as yurt and guest house offering different experiences. The guides were all friendly, helpful and on the whole very knowledgeable for in many cases very young people. Again, in general the drivers drove with consideration for their passengers but there were a few cases when this was lacking. The overall flow of the 21 days was good but there were a couple of instances where there was a lot of driving for little reward, and some parts were a little rushed. We were a group of 4 and our fellow travellers met Odil (the owner) and gave him our views which he took on board. In conclusion we had a really good holiday and are glad that the current world turmoil did not stop us seeing a fascinating and contrasting area of the world. It was well worth it.

We have been talking about visiting the 5 Stans for several years and have just come to the end of a memorable adventure. This was a private tour with my wife and brother and sister-in-law. Just the four of us. We are so glad we travelled with Steppe Journeys. The company is a family run business based in Tashkent so they have all the up to date local knowledge. It is run by Odil and several family members. We booked direct with them and the process was seamless from start to finish and we were kept informed at all times. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The English speaking guides were excellent and we had some great experiences with them. All transfers went smoothly and on time. The vehicles were comfortable and drivers good. We were supplied with plenty of water each day. The hotels were in good locations and some were very grand! The 5 Stans are so different. We experienced the vast deserts of Türkmenistan, the mountains of Tajikistan, the splendour of Sandakan and Bukhara plus much more. An amazing journey. If you are thinking of visiting the 5 Stans look no further than Steppe Journeys.

We are so glad you chose to travel with Steppe Journeys and that the experience met your expectations from start to finish. It was our pleasure to host you, your wife, and your brother and sister-in-law . We are especially happy to hear that the guides, transfers, vehicles, and hotels all contributed to a smooth and comfortable journey. The 5 Stans really do offer such a rich variety of landscapes and cultures, from the vast deserts of Turkmenistan to the stunning mountains of Tajikistan and the magnificent Silk Road cities of Samarkand and Bukhara. I would consider this a discount tour. If you are an experienced traveler you will be fine, but if you are not comfortable coordinating transfers and connecting with local guides this is not the tour for you. We did not have a tour leader and all the vouchers and transfers were given to someone on the tour to give to the local guide. The local guides were excellent and very knowledgeable about the sites. The architecture and historic sites are in very good condition. The hotels were also very good - large rooms, great locations, excellent staff. Arrive a day early or add an extra day to visit the new Islamic Civilization Center in Tashkent as it is excellent. This was not included in the tour we booked but was a highlight of our time in Tashkent. There were a few hiccups during the trip, however. On arrival in Tashkent, our driver was not waiting for us in the arrival hall. We had a similar problem coordinating transfer to the airport when leaving. If I hadn't purchased a local SIM card at the airport, I wouldn't have been able to use WhatsApp to connect with our driver and local guides throughout the tour. If you are not prepared to advocate for yourself and are not comfortable navigating in a different culture and language, this tour is probably not for you.
Uzbekistan Cultural & Historical tour 8 - Day
Dear Stephanie, Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about your recent tour with us. We genuinely appreciate your feedback, as it helps us improve our services and ensure a better experience for our travelers. We’re glad to hear that you found our local guides to be excellent and knowledgeable about the sites, and we’re pleased that you enjoyed the architecture and historic locations throughout Uzbekistan. Your recommendation to arrive early to visit the Islamic Civilization Center in Tashkent is valuable, and we will certainly consider including it in future itineraries. We apologize for the hiccups you experienced with the airport transfers. It’s important to us that our guests feel supported throughout their journey. We will review our procedures to ensure that drivers are consistently waiting for our guests upon arrival and that transfers are seamless. Your insights about the level of independence required during the tour are appreciated, and we will make sure to communicate this clearly to future travelers. We want everyone to feel comfortable and prepared for their adventure. Thank you once again for your constructive feedback. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back on another journey in the future, where we can provide an even better experience. Warm regards, Odil Akhmedov Steppe Journeys

Our group of five from Taiwan recently finished a 10-day tour. Overall, it was a very positive experience with high-quality service. The Highlights: Expert Planning: The coordinator, Odil, was incredibly responsive and efficient. He provided great advice during the planning stage and was quick to resolve any issues. Amazing Locations: The hotel selections in Khiva and Bukhara were perfect. Staying in a converted Madrasah inside the Khiva old city was a highlight—compact but full of atmosphere. Top-tier Guide: Our guide, Islombek, was professional and flexible. He suggested skipping some distant sites to optimize our time, which made the trip much more enjoyable. Accountability: When there was a mistake with our train tickets, Odil took immediate responsibility and provided a generous lunch at Charvak Lake as compensation. Things to Note: Ayaz Kala Yurt: While the experience was unique, the yurt was quite small for 5 adults and all our luggage. I’d suggest requesting extra space for larger groups. Booking Platform: We used WeTravel for payment. The interface is very user-friendly, but the transaction fees are quite high, which is something to keep in mind. Conclusion: Our journey in Uzbekistan was truly pleasant, visiting so many wonderful cities and sites. We want to thank Steppy Journey for arranging this trip and for finding a suitable Chinese-speaking guide for us travelers from Taiwan. We would be happy to recommend this tour to our friends!
