Futbol is life. This soccer tournament trip was a once in a lifetime experience for my son. The boys watched and played a lot of soccer, it also helped that the FIFA World Cup was competing at the same time as the Gothia Cup. This trip was very well planned and executed. The Ryerson Brothers (Rob, Rich & Tim) were very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable of every aspect of the tournament and traveling in Sweden. They did a great job at managing the logistics of the boys and parents accompanying the trip, which I’m sure wasn’t easy with a bunch of teenage boys.
My daughter and I accompanied my son who played with the soccer team. Our favorite part of the trip was our time spent at the beginning of the trip with our hosts in Orby at Tva Skyttlar. It was picturesque next to the lake and a great start to relax after a long travel night. We sat in the sauna that overlooked the lake and took a paddle board out for a spin. The food was excellent, fresh and accommodated all dietary restrictions. The fresh bread and butter might have been the best things I tasted the whole trip. During the trip we even had a Swedish lesson and had fun singing in Swedish.
Sightseeing in the coastal city of Varberg and visiting the Varberg Fortress was also memorable after a friendly competition with a Swedish team. It was nice to explore a local Swedish town and eat some local food.
Traveling to Gothenburg was an easy bus ride and that is when the boys/parent split to the school and hotel rooms. From my experience, the hotel was a nice accommodation with great air conditioning (definitely a plus for the heat wave Sweden was having) and was close to the bus/tram stops. Navigating the city using the bus/trams was easy and free during the Gothia Cup Tournament week. The included breakfast spread every morning was very European with plenty of foods to eat. I brought ziplock bags to bring pastries to my son (and friends) to eat after the soccer games. He appreciated the extra food. He wasn’t a big fan of the food at the school but there were opportunities for him to get different/more food if needed. Packing snacks, protein bars are definitely necessary and a refillable water bottle.
The Gothia Cup Opening Ceremony was a big pep rally with pump up music, team representation from all the countries and fireworks. It really got everyone in the mood to start the Gothia Cup Tournament. The boys even made it on the big screen during the show.
My son’s favorite part of the trip was playing soccer at the school with all the other boys and teams from around the world. He was able to exchange soccer jerseys at the end of the tournament with kids from Sweden.
The boat tour around Gothenburg was a great team experience and history lesson. It was nice to see the city from the water view and hear the tour guide speak Swedish.
The days after the tournament the boys had fun going to the amusement park Lisberg, escape room experiences, and shopping. There is a lot to do in Gothenburg and all easy to navigate.
Overall we had a blast on the trip. I felt very comfortable traveling with my 2 kids to multiple countries. Watching the World Cup games (and “rowing”when Norway scored) in Sweden in the middle of the night with a group of soccer players will definitely be rememberable for 2026. We would surely go back if we had the chance. Thanks Ryerson Soccer Travel!
