We had a very happy time in general. Wonderful guides, musicians, concerts, and travelers. However we had NO amplification any day on the bus. There were daily promises of solving the problem, but despite the fact that we were in Scottish cities, resolution apparently was not possible. The result of this problem was that the passengers behind the first two or three rows missed Duncan's dramatic stories and. history. These were pertinent, funny, dramatic and necessary for one's successful understanding and enjoyment of the trip. Something you can't prevent is that two of our friends developed COVID during the trip and had to be ferried to alternate sites. One of them had a disastrous moment at the Wingate Hotel where the sewer backed up into her shower. They moved to another hotel for their second night. The small hotels were very special, but hardly barrier free. Taking heavy suitcases up many sets of stairs was challenging. However, I had my 60-year-old daughter traveling with me, and she was very helpful. Sadly, I, the 89 year old, tested positive for COVID my second day home. Seems to be a relatively mild case, perhaps because I'd had two original vaccines and the new one shortly before the trip., This is not how I intended to spend my return home. Sadly, sometimes it seemed we were traveling many miles (beautiful countryside) to the next loo or eatery. I will have to try to identify the sites we visited as I review the itinerary and my pictures. Perhaps That may be attributed to age . Many thought the BBQ Bar was wonderful. I did not. It is the kind of place with thousands of empty bottles as decor, so it is difficult to keep from becoming grimy. Also, seating to enjoy the concert did not compare to the other venues, which were really special. Having dumped. all that negative stuff, it was a beautiful trip with engaging guides. I I truly enjoyed the guides (Fiona. Duncan and David) and the friends I made among the passengers.

Scotland Folk Tours do great work with Scotland tourism, wonderful guides and programs. But I found for there was little support for the music portion of the trip, or for the musician who invited the participants. (Nobody from SFT thought to thank me for filling up their bus with my friends and fans.) Putting the musicians and the travelers into a cold empty hotel conference room, without involving the public, and with not so much as a rented potted plant, was a recipe for failure for these nights they called 'concerts'. If you like guided tours of Scotland, you would have enjoyed this trip. If you are interested in the music, or you followed a musician here because you care about their music, you will be disappointed.

This review, written by a former musical Leader, is the single time in our company’s history in which Scotland Folk Tours vision, and the Leader’s expectations, did not line up. We employ the Leaders, and Darryl was, as he said to us, “wicked, wicked tired” as he started the Tour, and that was coupled with a complete misconception about the nature of our Tours and how they work. He informed us mid-tour, that he did not really like guided group Tours. Our musical Leaders are there to serve the tours, and we hope they will do so with humility and with curiosity about the Scottish land and its people.
Music is an important part of our foundation. Our tours are designed for travelers who love Americana/Folk music (including their tour leader’s music), but who are also curious and interested in learning about the long and rich tradition of Scottish music. Our Tours are “Led” by noted folk/Americana artists, and we make it clear in our itineraries that travelers will be treated to 2 scheduled private concerts by our musical Leader, and numerous evenings of music by noted Scottish artists. But, ultimately, these are Tours of Scotland, and historic sites and culture play a large part in the guest experience. We also pride ourselves in our Scottish guides— among the very best in the business.
Darryl is a former employee of ours, and his attitude and comments with some of his guests, also affected their experience. We’re sorry that that happened. I deeply dispute Darryl’s final comments, and I encourage you to read over all of our other tour reviews to see the full picture. We have many guests return to travel with us repeatedly, and we have never had another musical Leader make such complaints— most, if not all of our Leaders travel and work with us multiple times. We're sorry that Darryl did not understand and embrace our ethos, and we sincerely apologize to the small number of his guests who echo his opinions. - Tim Grimm, Founder/Director of Scotland Folk Tours
