Wonderful experience in Madeira! From pre-trip support to in-person, I was able to go into this trip truly relaxed, knowing that everything was going to be taken care of. GUIDES: Anna (one of the founders) was with us every step of the way. With day-before briefings so that we knew exactly what to expect the next day, and all the assistance with coordinating taxis and pickups when needed. Despite having run this trip for many years, you could see Anna’s passion and love for the area, but also getting to witness others enjoy it. We had a second local guide join us during our runs who was patient, friendly and just a good person to be around. RUNNING: The trip had less running than my usual trail running trips. Two days about 17km and the rest about 10 km, but this is in part due to the race at the end of the week…you don’t want to go in it burnt out. Although the shorter distances, the views were epic. From running above clouds to ocean cliffside….I never felt like I was missing out. They did a good job at choosing routes that weren’t overcrowded - or started extra early on the days that were going to be a bit busier. One of the routes allowed us to see parts of what we’d be racing later in the week, which was nice to start visualizing. OTHER ACTIVITIES: This experience was beyond just running. There was a day of canoeing, a half day of surfing, and a much-needed afternoon on a VIP catamaran, spent truly relaxing. It was nice to split up the days with different activities. LEVEL: This trip can likely accommodate any type of runner. As long as you’re comfortable being on your feet for a few hours and climbing some serious uphills, you’ll be ok. We had a big range in paces, but having the 2 guides allowed for no one to really be left alone. We always regrouped at major junction points. ACCOMMODATION & MEALS: The hotel we stayed at was a highlight, Quinta do Furão. It truly felt like a retreat. The meals, amenities, everything was perfect. My only comment here was that I wish we had more time to enjoy it! We’d often be out at 8 am and back after dinner for bedtime. An extra day just to lounge or enjoy the amenities would have been a lovely add-on. The hotel is located outside of the main area of Santana, so if you want to go out for dinner, etc., it’s either a 45min uphill walk….or a quick 7min taxi ride. That being said, all the meals at the restaurant were excellent and varied, didn’t feel like we needed to go eat elsewhere. OVERALL: I really enjoyed my experience and will not hesitate to book another one with this company. I also really want to go back to Madeira because this tour only touches one part of the island, and there is still so much to see!
