About your trip

Venture deep into the wild heart of Katmai National Park on a bear photography expedition unlike anything else on Earth. Sleep beneath vast Alaskan skies, wake to the sounds of the wilderness, and enjoy unrivaled access to photograph coastal brown bears, soaring eagles, and perhaps even wolves.

The Bear Camp Experience

Experience one of the greatest wildlife photography destinations on Earth. Join us in Katmai National Park, Alaska, for an unforgettable small group photography adventure focused on coastal brown bears, dramatic landscapes, and the raw wilderness of Alaska in peak summer.

July is prime time in Katmai. Bears congregate in the bay and tidal flats to eat, fish, spar, and interact, offering extraordinary opportunities to capture iconic bear behavior at close but safe distances. Long daylight hours, lush green backdrops, snow capped mountains, and active wildlife create ideal conditions for both action and storytelling images.

This trip is designed by photographers, for photographers. With a deliberately small group size, you’ll receive personalized guidance in the field, ample shooting time, and access to prime locations without the pressure of large crowds. Whether you’re refining your photography technique, working on a portfolio, or simply chasing once in a lifetime images, this experience delivers.

Beyond bears, Katmai offers the chance to photograph foxes, wolves, moose, bald eagles, seabirds, and expansive landscapes. We’ll work the light, weather, and animal behavior each day to maximize photographic opportunities, adapting plans as conditions evolve.

Highlights include:

  • Coastal based brown bear photography in peak season

  • Small group size for optimal shooting angles and flexibility

  • In the field instruction on composition, behavior, and camera technique

  • Remote Alaskan wilderness accessible only by bush plane

  • Opportunities for wide angle environmental portraits and tight action shots

  • Long summer days with extended golden hour shooting

Katmai is wild, unpredictable, and profoundly rewarding. If you’re seeking an authentic Alaska bear photography adventure that prioritizes access, ethics, and photographic success, this trip belongs on your calendar.

Our Camp

Our high end camp is designed to deliver comfort without compromising the wilderness experience with spacious, sturdy tents, comfortable mattresses and sleeping gear. A large dining tent provides a great space to relax with fellow guests and enjoy exceptional meals prepared and served by our guides. A private toilet tent with a full size toilet and even a shower adds extra comfort.

Safety is our highest priority, which is why our camp is led by two expertly trained bear guides. This not only ensures peace of mind, but also gives us the flexibility to tailor hikes for different interests and energy levels.

The camp is thoughtfully equipped with multiple solar panels for charging cameras, phones, and computers, a remote weather station to stay ahead of changing conditions, and a reinforced bear fence to keep everyone safe and secure throughout your stay.

Physical Requirements

Our camp is set in a remote region of Katmai, accessible only by float plane and boat, offering truly unparalleled opportunities to observe bears in their natural habitat with minimal human presence. While the landscape in this area is largely flat, daily hikes may cover up to seven miles, depending on bear activity. The terrain can be uneven at times, with natural obstacles such as logs and ground depressions. We will also cross several creeks, which depending on tides and rainfall may reach hip depth and feature strong currents. Although we carefully plan our crossings around tidal conditions whenever possible, everyone should be prepared to work together as a group to ensure safety.

Guests should be in good physical condition and capable of walking several miles each day. You should feel comfortable and steady on your feet in wet or slippery conditions, and be able to sit on the ground and stand back up unassisted.

What Makes This Trip Different

This expedition is thoughtfully designed by photographers and nature lovers, for photographers and nature lovers with every detail focused on safety, comfort, and exceptional time in the field. Here’s what makes this Katmai experience truly stand apart:

Unmatched safety and flexibility: Two certified, highly experienced bear guides are with us at all times, ensuring your safety while allowing the photography guide to stay fully focused on you and your work in the field.

A personalized, small group experience: With two bear guides, the group can comfortably split when needed, whether some guests want to hike farther, move slower, or simply take a break without compromising safety or opportunities.

Exceptional comfort in the wilderness: Our top tier camping equipment goes far beyond standard backcountry setups, providing comfort throughout the trip along with thoughtful “nice to have” touches that elevate your experience in camp.

A seamless start to the adventure: Your first night hotel stay and a welcome dinner are included, giving you time to relax, connect with fellow travelers, and ease into the journey.

Peace of mind, even in remote Alaska: State of the art communication systems and an on site weather station keep us informed, connected, and prepared in this remote environment.

Power where it matters: Advanced solar panels in camp allow you to reliably charge cameras, batteries, phones, and other essential devices so you never miss a moment.

Real food, made fresh: Our guides prepare delicious, freshly cooked meals every day. This is far from typical “camp food” and a highlight of the experience for many guests.

Maximized time in prime light: Camp locations and daily plans are designed around optimal lighting and wildlife activity, giving you more meaningful time shooting during golden hours without long daily travel from other locations.

Ethical, low impact wildlife access: Our approach prioritizes respectful distances, minimal human impact, and authentic wildlife behavior resulting in stronger images and a more meaningful connection to the landscape.

Bear Days

Each morning begins with a hearty breakfast in camp before we pack our day bags with lunch and snacks and head out into the wild in search of bears and other remarkable wildlife. In the Alaskan wilderness, flexibility is essential. Our daily plans are guided by animal activity, weather, and conditions on the ground. We’ll shape each day around nature’s rhythms, adjusting our schedule to take full advantage of the best light and the most compelling photographic opportunities Alaska has to offer.

Time to Say Goodbye

As with all great adventures, our time in the wilderness eventually draws to a close. Today we’ll break camp and prepare for departure, with timing dictated by tides and weather. Alaska is famously unpredictable, and conditions can change quickly, so flexibility is essential. We’ll be ready to move as soon as the float plane can safely reach us. Once back in Kodiak, we strongly recommend having an extra night reserved, just in case weather delays our return. For this reason, it’s best to schedule your flight home for the following day.
