An Unforgettable Catalan Culinary & Wine Masterpiece
Following a spectacular week in Tuscany with Antoni and Val, we joined them for another exceptional journey at the Villa Mas Anglada in rural Fonteta, about 130 km north of Barcelona. This week was a flawless immersion into the rich wine, olive oil, and culinary traditions of Catalonia.
The Venue & Host Hospitality
The beautifully restored 16th-century villa offered the perfect blend of modern, comfortably equipped rooms within a deeply charming, rustic ambience. The setting is spectacular, featuring immediately adjacent vineyards and an estate winery. We were treated to a private tour and tasting by the wine master, and were even honored by a personal visit from the estate's owner, Mr. Luis Conde, who also graciously joined us for dinner one evening. The entire staff—from the attentive chambermaids, the exceptional chef and assistants, to the grounds manager (a family member)—made us feel completely at home.
Unmatched Wine & Culinary Excursions
The itinerary was brilliantly curated. We began with a tour of old Barcelona, complete with a fantastic local food tasting before heading to the villa. A standout highlight was our visit to Artcava, an artisan boutique winery in the Penedès region south of Barcelona. There, we experienced the hands-on thrill of disgorging our own bottle of Cava after its second fermentation, then capping, labeling, and taking it home as a unique souvenir. Throughout the week, we enjoyed authentic wine, cheese, and estate olive oil tastings right where they are produced, including the rare treat of tasting Vermouth directly out of the aging barrels.
Coastal Adventures & Daily Traditions
The trip offered a wonderful balance of inland culture and Mediterranean beauty, including scenic trips, hikes, and kayaking along the charming coastal cities of the Costa Brava. Every evening concluded with a delightful daily l'apéro, featuring rotating local themes of regional drinks and light finger foods. This led into a magnificent long-table dinner served in the villa yard, framed by stunning sunset views filtering through the trees.
Exceptional Guiding & Leadership
What truly elevated this trip was the people. Gina, our local tour guide who stayed with us throughout the journey, was incredibly knowledgeable and gracious. She shared a wealth of historical context, culinary habits, and fascinating local stories, both ancient and modern. Erin, our trip leader, ran everything seamlessly with her profound wine expertise, sharp attention to detail, and flawless execution.
Just like our time in Tuscany, this was a masterful, deeply authentic Epicurean adventure. Highest recommendation.
